If you have to design a system that can serve 1B+ ad requests/day or ~200 GB/hour, then most likely your choice is going to be some fancy big data technology. And of course, that makes sense too. These numbers would seem like a puny human against the hulk of a tool like Kafka, Spark, Flink, Hadoop and what not. It's easy to design that way. Recently has served 1.2B+ ad feedback requests and 425M unique impressions per day. It was a proud moment for the engineers as the in-house system that was designed 2 years ago, had now auto-scaled almost 10x. But the journey to develop such a system was a long string of experiments. AdPushup Back in 2016, when I joined AdPushup, we didn’t have any concrete data pipeline. The priority was to build and stabilize the A/B testing tool suite. For reporting, we were relying on Google (GAM, Adsense) and other partners. However, frequent reporting requests and the need for informed decision making, pushed the need for an in-house reporting setup. Being new to AdTech reporting, the team had a vague idea about the important data points that could be useful for the publishers. So a flexible approach was strategized and all the available data points were recorded. The client-side script started sending data in JSON format on a number of events like, ad view, click etc. Every hit/request had around 20–30 data points. A schema-agnostic system/tool was required and thanks to , ample amounts of credits were at the team’s disposal for experimentation. Microsoft’s venture accelerator plan Let the EXPERIMENTS begin! The was the first choice as it was red hot at that time and it provided the exact freedom from schema that was needed. So a small cluster of Elastic Search was setup and logs were poured into it. It worked great initially, but it didn’t scale as expected. ELK stack The single dimension aggregation was working very smoothly. However, the performance degraded as aggregation across multiple dimensions was tried. As the data size and number of incoming requests increased, the overall performance of the cluster went down. Adding more nodes to the cluster helped initially, but after a point performance stopped improving. Failure with ELK (sort of) compelled us to consider other solutions. So instead of an in-house solution, we started looking for some kind of a managed or white-label solution. The team’s googling skill landed us on (luckily!) and it turned out to be a brilliant tool. It had all the benefits of the ELK stack plus so much more: keen.io Completely managed tool. No infra maintenance needed. Auto schema discovery. Works great for all kind aggregation queries. Easy to setup and use. BUT, the benefits didn’t warrant the bill. The estimated charge was somewhere around . The long-term costing was way too high for an early-stage startup to bear. $13k/month Reminded of the free credits from Azure, the team planned to use the full-fledged Big Data stack — Kafka+Spark+Hive, the whole shebang. Fortunately, a managed solution for this was found in Azure — . A short POC was conducted and the performance seemed convincing. Every single component of the setup was both vertically and horizontally scalable, plus there was practically zero management. No bottlenecks were foreseen. But again the cost of that cluster didn’t make sense, given the small data size. Azure HDInsight The estimated charge was , that was more than double the cost of total infrastructure on Azure. around $7.5k/month The detour — Where the magic happened While all of this was going on, a requirement for setting up a highly available key-value data store arose. The idea was to serve some configuration across the globe with minimum possible latency. CDN was out of option as the team had anticipated complex computing at the edges. So a setup with web servers and local datastores at multiple geographical locations was designed. For datastore, Redis, MongoDB, ElasticSearch and Couchbase were benchmarked. After a few tests, seemed to be the most suitable option. Installation was pretty straightforward, cluster management was mostly self-managed and it had quite a mature and stable, out-of-the-box data replication mechanism — . (CB) Couchbase XDCR After a few iterations, the final design had an auto-scalable webserver cluster ( ) and a two-node Couchbase (CB) cluster at 4 prominent locations, US, UK, APAC and IN. For traffic distribution, we used . It helped in distributing traffic based on the geographical location of the incoming DNS query. Two separate CB buckets were created to hold configurations in the central CB cluster. These CB buckets were further replicated to all four edge locations. The replication strategy was based on the geographical distance between the regions. Azure VMSS AWS Route53’s geographical routing Getting documents with a specific key was fast as expected. The total application response time was under 40ms which was acceptable. Total cost incurred was around . $2.1k/month There was a need for a monitoring system as well in order to keep an eye on the application logs. So we re-used the same setup and created a third CB bucket to store the logs. For a unified dashboard view, all the logs were required to be present at a single data center. Therefore the logs were XDCR’ed from all regions to the central CB cluster (black dotted lines in the previous image). In-house Logger System We created a dashboard to view the latest logs, their details and counts. Couchbase Views were used for this aggregation. The logger system turned out to be quite useful. AND… fortuitously, our in-house custom logging system was up and running with minor additional cost (moving logs between the regions). That’s when it dawned upon us to try to re-use this for our reporting pipeline as well!! We started by adding a new Java Servlet endpoint on the existing web servers to collect the raw data from clients. Request data was stored in a newly created CB bucket in each region. A java application to stream data using a CB View was created and deployed in each region. A list of fixed data points was formed and the application aggregated them in-memory. It would keep reading from the CB view, aggregating till the end of an hour and pushed the aggregations into a central SQL database. It also compressed the raw data concurrently into format and stored it into cold storage for later on-demand processing. Post a successful cycle, checkpoints were updated, previous hour logs were cleared and processing of the next hour’s data was initiated. .tar.gz The Eureka moment! To our surprise, this was successful in terms of cost efficiency and reporting goals. IT WORKED!! The additional monthly cost incurred was of the crunching servers ( ) + the extra bandwidth of incoming data ( ) + SQL Server ( ). So, a feasible, easy-to-maintain data pipeline was possible under . fixed $1.3k ~$300 fixed $1.1k $5k/month We were able to get the complete reporting up and running in under 1 month. We supported 21 dimensions and 42 metrics with the flexibility of adding more data points any time in future. One of the biggest advantages of this shared infrastructure was low cost and low maintenance. Due to the simplicity of this design, we were able to build and maintain the pipeline with a team of 2 engineers only! There was no concept of asset bundling before, but with the emergence of relevant tools like , , Webpack, etc. it has become quite apparent, why we should be going with them.” Michael: Browserify Rollup How do module bundlers work? “A module bundler, in simple words, is a tool that bundles or concatenates all of your modules together. It generates a dependency graph of all of the JavaScript modules, which is an abstract syntax tree. It will then traverse down the dependency graph, looking at each module and that module’s dependencies recursively, and will add them to a single JavaScript bundle that can be served to the client.” Michael: How does browserify help us to use NPM modules on the browser side? “Browserify was the very first module bundler that introduced the idea of requiring modules in the “Node way, “ i.e., using the require statement. That meant that we could use any CommonJS module with Browserify. Since CommonJS is the de-facto module system that works with Node JS, we can make use of it and require any CommonJS module with Browserify. Bam! There you go.. NPM modules on the client side. Michael: Just install a module using NPM, require it in your code and bundle it using Browserify.” What is webpack? How can you optimize a bundle in webpack? “Webpack is also a module bundler that offers a whole lot more! It’s worth mentioning that the Webpack team has done a brilliant job with their open source initiatives, making frequent Webpack releases and bug fixes, and maintaining the overall project. Webpack has a different philosophy on how it understands modules. Every input entry acts as a module for Webpack, be it JavaScript, CSS, SASS, CoffeeScript, etc. You just need a proper “ ” to handle the file type, and Webpack will take care of the rest. One of the most prominent features in Webpack is that it comes bundled with optimisation tools, so you get support for things like , , etc., right out of the box! No need for third-party plugins. Michael: loader Tree Shaking Code Splitting JSConf, Belgium: The talk by Arun Michael Dsouza There are various ways to optimise a bundle in Webpack - You can use the plugin (which comes bundled with Webpack), it’s pretty easy to use. It will minify the output bundle for you. Uglification You can run Webpack in using the -p flag, it will automatically trigger uglification and related optimisations for you. production mode Minifying your CSS is also a good idea, the can be used to do that. CSS-loader Tree shaking your unused exports is a brilliant technique that can be used with ES6. It can drastically reduce your bundle size. From a High School Coder to an International Tech Speaker — Interview with Arun Michael Dsouza

Do you ever find yourself whispering these excuses to yourself? "When I finally get this promotion, THEN I'll have time to start my side hustle." "When the kids are a little older, THEN I'll finally get back to painting." "When I have a bigger house, THEN I can start hosting those dinner parties I've dreamed of." "When I have more money saved, THEN I'll feel secure enough to travel." If you do, you're not alone. I've been there too.  We all get stuck in the trap of thinking the perfect conditions will appear like magic down the road. Only then, the stars aligning, will we somehow be ready to chase our dreams/do the thing. But here's the spoiler no one likes to admit: That perfect "X" moment will NEVER arrive. There will ALWAYS be something—a new project at work, a sick kid, an unexpected car repair—demanding your attention and energy. "Someday" is the biggest lie we tell ourselves. It's a fluffy pillow to soften the blow of our inaction.  We wrap ourselves in its comforting excuse, but deep down, we know that if we don't make a move , "someday" will fade into "never."  Worse, it'll fade into a nagging regret you carry with you for years to come. now The Truth About Readiness (And Why it's Not What You Think) Here comes the hard-to-swallow truth: Readiness, in the way we typically picture it, is a complete myth. You don't magically become infused with expertise, bulletproof confidence, and infinite resources after some external factor changes. Think about it this way: Did Beyoncé wake up one day feeling flawlessly ready to conquer the world, or did she build her skills, stage presence, and business savvy through countless hours of sweat and imperfect performances? Remember that kid in your high school class who seemed effortlessly good at everything? The one who aced tests without studying and charmed even the grouchiest teachers?  I bet if you dug deeper, you'd learn they were putting in work behind the scenes when no one was looking. Readiness isn't bestowed;  it's BUILT. Each imperfect step you take forges that readiness in the fire of action. The "Start Now" Mentality: A Personal Story Years ago, I desperately wanted to leave my corporate job and become a writer (start a newsletter… blog… anything).  But "someday" was my best friend. Someday, I'd have the perfect freelance client roster. Someday, I'd finally figure out this whole online marketing thing. Someday... Paralysis set in. All I did was watch videos, buy fancy courses, and dream.  One day, in a moment of frustration with myself, I decided to try something new. I forced myself to write a single blog post and hit publish...even though I thought it was terrible. YouTube The next day, I did it again. And again. Some were cringe-worthy, and some gained a bit of traction. But it didn't matter.  The act of doing, however messy, was chipping away at my fear and building my skills.  Within a year, I had enough momentum and income to make the leap into earning some income, selling ads on a newsletter (fast forward to today, the newsletter has 320,000 subscribers). That never happens if I keep waiting for the magic moment of readiness. Messy Action > Perfect Inaction Let's make this real. Let's say your dream is to get in shape finally. Here's the old mindset vs. the action-first mindset: Old "Someday" Mindset: I need to join the fancy gym. I need the perfect workout clothes. I need to find a trainer and get a program designed... Result:  You end up spending weeks comparing gym memberships and end up doing  nothing. Action-First Mindset: It's rainy out, and I'm tired, but my old sneakers are fine. I'll do one of those YouTube workout videos in my living room. It might be awkward, but I'm gonna get moving. Result: It's not glamorous, but it's a start! You're BUILDING the habit of moving your body regularly. Each day it gets a tiny bit easier. "But What About..." (Common Barriers Busted) I can hear the objections whispering in your head. So let's tackle some of the most common ones: Truth bomb: We ALL have the same 24 hours. Successful people aren't gifted extra time; they get ruthless about priorities.  Audit your day. Where does your time vanish on social media, mindless TV, or tasks that could be outsourced? Can you carve out even 15 minutes a day for your goal? You'll be shocked at what you can do with focused intention. "I don't have TIME!" Aren't you more afraid of never trying and living with regret? Failure is inevitable on the path to anything worthwhile. Embrace it as a teacher. Each stumble informs what to do differently –  that's growth happening. "I'm afraid of FAILING!" This is where creativity is your superpower. Can't afford a class? There's an insane amount of free knowledge online. Need equipment?  Look for secondhand options or see if a friend will loan it.  Remember, it's about your resourcefulness, not the size of your wallet. "I don't have the RESOURCES!" The Bottom Line: "Someday" Will Betray You Every day spent waiting for perfect conditions is a day you're not actively building the life you truly want. Imagine yourself five years from now. Do you want to look back and see a trail of "somedays" fading into the distance? Or do you want to see how far you've come because of those imperfect first steps you finally took? The "Start Now" Challenge (Take it Seriously!) I want to challenge you, and I mean challenge you, to take one small, uncomfortable step toward your goal today.  Not tomorrow, not after you research/plan/organize more – TODAY. Don't let yourself off the hook! really Here's how: What's the absolute smallest action that you've been avoiding? (Ex: write 50 words, send a sales email, register for that one class, do 10 pushups) The Tiny Task: Don't overcomplicate it. Clear your space, set a timer for 20 minutes, do whatever gets that task in front of you. Remove the Barriers: Don't judge the quality, just focus on getting it DONE. Prove to yourself you can follow through. DO IT (no matter how imperfectly): You Are Readier Than You Think You wouldn't be reading this if there wasn't a fire inside of you, a voice whispering that you're meant for more.  Don't betray that part of yourself. Take the leap today, even just a tiny one. One step leads to another and then another, and suddenly that "someday" dream is within your grasp. The choice is yours. Are you ready to ditch the excuses and finally start building a life filled with purpose and passion? Then it's time to stop waiting on "X" and create your readiness. Your future self will thank you.
