Since we're in a unique and ever-evolving working world of the future far sooner than expected, I thought I'd share some of the lessons I've learned in how best to keep consistent and guide your team through turbulent times. 1. Get Dressed Up. Staying in your comfy pyjamas all day long will not motivate you to work but rather become lazy. To avoid this, I get ready as if I have to go to the office. Dress yourself as if you have somewhere important to be. I put on semi-formal clothes, and then I start my work. You can also choose to put on some nicer clothes or even more formal workwear. This is helpful in communicating a sense of leadership and professionalism, especially when you will be attending online meetings or video calls. 2. Have A Dedicated Space to Work in Your Home. If you don’t have a separate workspace in your home, your productivity can decrease. So try to choose a place in your home that will be exclusively used for work and keeps distractions away. 3. Set Your Work Routine, and Stick To It. Just because you are working remotely doesn’t mean you should be working all the time or you should work whenever you feel like. Set fixed working hours, stick to them, and prepare a time-bound to-do list for all the tasks that need to be done each day. Use Consistency To (Remotely) Lead Your Startup Through A Pandemic

The idea behind a coding test is very simple: to filter out candidates who do not have the technical chops for the role, early on in the process before the hiring manager and candidate both waste their time with an in-person interview. But most engineers today frown at the idea of completing a coding test, and over 50% straight out refuse to do status quo assessments (based on our research with 100+ companies in SEA). Here are 3 of the most common reasons why engineers hate status quo coding tests: 1. They test for algorithmic skill rather than the ability to write code. Companies need the scores from assessments to be significant, and the easiest way to do this to use trick questions on the assessments. To do well on these tests, candidates need to spend weeks practicing writing code for a list of trick questions. Only a fraction of developers can do well on these tests. As an interviewer, it is very easy to forget how stressful the interview setting is for the interviewee. Having to write executable code for a very niche algorithm you studied at school (that too only if you were a CS major), and never really used in your time as an engineer in the real world, with the timer ticking, can be very very intimidating! While it's great if someone's good at algorithms (even though this skill can be improved with practice), this is not a strong indicator of how good of an engineer someone is/ how good they're going to be in the role. Only a small fraction of tech roles require strong algorithmic ability. Also, this way of measuring developer skills' has an inherent bias against more experienced developers. As you can imagine no great developer is excited about the prospect of giving a test in the first place. Add it to the fact that questions are irrelevant and 50% of candidates straight out refuse to take these tests. 2. They're too big an ask Asking the candidate to spend more than 60 minutes on a coding test before you've spent any time is unfair. When you use a 3-hour coding test it defeats the purpose of automation, because while the hiring manager has nothing to lose, the candidate now needs to spend more time on it than they would have for a video/ in-person interview. The longer your assessment, the lower the test-taking rate will be. 3. It's harder to code in an unfamiliar environment Most developers have a preference of IDE (integrated development environment) that they've customized in a way that helps them write code seamlessly. A test environment is unfamiliar, and it's harder for a software engineer to function optimally. This is especially true when the test requires the use of not just a programming language in a simple code editor but instead is testing for front-end/ backend code framework capabilities. Developers often challenge the validity of coding tests/ assessments because of these and other reasons and understandably so. So, should we skip coding tests altogether? That is not an option. Anyone who has been involved in tech hiring knows that there are enough developers in the world who aren't qualified enough for the role, making it necessary to have some kind of a litmus test that candidates must pass before being invited to an interview. Can't we use a resume screen instead? Software engineers tend to not be good at selling themselves, and great candidates often massively undersell themselves on paper. At best, a resume screen helps you eliminate some candidates who are very clearly not qualified for the role and sort resumes by priority. Beyond that, using a resume filter has an inherent bias towards candidates with good credentials (education and work history). Good programmers can come from anywhere, and using keyword matching means you're probably missing out on a lot of great candidates. But if companies start interviewing everyone who applies, it would take up all of the engineering team's time just to interview candidates. Now that we've established the need for an assessment solution, how do we evaluate if the assessment solution we're using for our hiring is a good one? Here is a list of top things you want to check for. You're in good hands if: Your test-taking rate > 70%. The average time to complete the assessment is between 45-75 minutes. When you ask candidates for their feedback during in-person interviews, they have good things to say about their experience giving the assessment. Hiring managers are happy with the quality of candidates that are being forwarded to in-person rounds. If your current solution does not satisfy these criteria, you might be missing out on strong candidates for your team. As software engineers and hiring managers, my co-founder and I have previously used a majority of the status quo solutions and found the results unsatisfactory. So this is what we've been working towards for the past couple years on, and have seen early success in. Introduction The latest preview for .NET Core 3 (preview-6) has introduced the functionality to add authentication and authorization in a server-side Blazor application. In this article, we will learn how to implement authentication and authorization using Facebook in a server-side Blazor application. You can refer to my previous article to get in-depth knowledge on server-side Blazor. Understanding Server-side Blazor Prerequisites Install the latest .NET Core 3.0 Preview SDK from . here Install the latest preview of Visual Studio 2019 from . here Install ASP.NET Core Blazor Language Services extension from . here Source Code Get the source code from . GitHub Create Server Side Blazor Application To create a server-side Blazor app, open Visual Studio 2019 and follow the steps mentioned below: Click on “Create a new project”.Select “ASP.NET Core Web Application” from available project types. Click on Next.A new “Configure your new project” screen will open. Put the name of the project as BlazorFbAuth and click Create. In the next screen, select “.NET Core” and “ASP.NET Core 3.0” from dropdowns on the top left.Select “Blazor (server-side)” from the list of available templates. Click on Change Authentication button, a “Change Authentication” dialog box will open. Select “Individual User Account” and click OK. Click on Create button to create the application. These steps are shown in the GIF image below. Before running the application, we need to apply migrations to our app. Navigate to Tools >> NuGet Package Manager >> Package Manager Console. It will open the Package Manager Console. Put in the command and hit enter. This will update the database using Entity Framework Code First Migrations. Update-Database Right-click on the project in solution explorer and select properties. Select Debug from left side menu then scroll to the bottom of the page. Note the SSL enabled URL. In this case, the URL is . We need this URL to configure the Facebook app which we will be doing in our next section. Refer to the image below. https://localhost:44396/ Creating a Facebook App We need to create a Facebook app and configure Facebook Login for it. We will then use the App ID and App Secret of this Facebook app to implement Facebook authentication in our Blazor app. Navigate to and sign in using your Facebook account. Follow the steps mentioned below. https://developers.facebook.com/apps/ Click on the “Create App” button under the “My Apps” menu on the top. It will open a “Create a New App ID” dialog box. Put in the “Display Name” and “Contact Email”. The default email will be your Facebook email id. However, you can change it and put any email of your choice. Click on “Create App ID” to create the app. Refer to the image below. Navigate to the app dashboard by clicking on the “Dashboard” link on the navigation menu on the left. Under the “Add a Product” section, select the “Facebook Login” product and click on “Set Up” button. A QuickStart wizard will be launched asking you to select a platform for the app. Skip this wizard and click on Facebook Login > Settings from the navigation menu on the left. You will be navigated to the Client OAuth Settings page. In the Valid OAuth redirect URIs field enter the base URL of your application with /signin-facebook appended to it. For this tutorial, the URL will be . Click on “Save Changes” button. https://localhost:44396/signin-facebook Now click on Settings > Basic on the navigation menu. You will see the App ID and App Secret values. Make a note of these values as we need them to configure Facebook authentication in our Blazor app. Refer to the GIF below for a better understanding. The trademark or brand element of Facebook is not allowed to be used as the Display Name of your Facebook App. Therefore, words such as FB, Face, Book, Insta, etc. cannot be used as Display Name. Installing Facebook authentication middleware NuGet package To configure the ASP.NET Core middleware for Facebook authentication we need to install the nuget package in our application. The version of this nuget package must match the version of .NET Core 3 which we are using in our project. Open . Select the version of .NET Core 3 from the “Version History”. Copy the command from the “package manager” tab. Run this command in the NuGet package manager console of our application. https://www.nuget.org/packages/Microsoft.AspNetCore.Authentication.Facebook/ For this application, we are using . We will use Secret Manager tool for this purpose. The Secret Manager tool is a project tool that is used to store secrets such as password, API Key, etc. for a .NET Core project during the development process. Secret Manager tool allows us to associate app secrets with a specific project. It also allow us to share them across multiple projects. Open our web application once again and Right-click the project in Solution Explorer. Select Manage User Secrets from the context menu. A file will open. This component is used to display different content based on the authentication state of the application. This component will display the child component only when the user is authorized.  The component is configured in file. AuthorizeView AuthorizeView \Shared\LoginDisplay.razor To implement authorization to a specific page, we need to use the attribute. Blazor has introduced a new directive @attribute, which is used to include the attribute for a page. In this application, we will apply to the FetchData component. This will prohibit unauthorized access to this component. Open page and add the following lines at the top of the page. [Authorize] [Authorize] [Authorize] FetchData.razor Microsoft.AspNetCore.Authorization [Authorize] @using @attribute Execution Demo Launch the application. Navigate to Fetch Data component by clicking on the “Fetch data” link on the menu on the left. You will see a “Not authorized” message displayed on the screen. Click “Log In” on the menu at the top. In the next page click on the “Facebook” button to login with Facebook. On the next page, you will be asked to provide the login credentials of your Facebook account. Fill the details and click Log In. Upon successful login, you will be able to access the Fetch Data component. If you do not want to login then click on “Not now”. It will redirect you back to the Login page of Blazor app. Refer to the GIF below for a better understanding. Once you are logged in successfully into our Blazor app using Facebook, you will be also logged in to https://www.facebook.com/. This will create a set of browser cookie for https://www.facebook.com/. Therefore, the Blazor app will not ask the Facebook credentials when you try to login again. If you log out from Facebook then you have to enter credentials while logging into Blazor app. Conclusion We learned how to implement Facebook authentication and authorization in a server-side Blazor application. We have created and configured a Facebook app to implement Facebook authentication. To implement authorization for a specific component in Blazor, we have used the [Authorize] attribute. We have used nuget package to configure the middleware for Facebook authentication.
