Branding Success: Guaranteed Engagement in The Sandbox

Speaking as an OG Hackernoon Author and even a 2022 Noonie finalist, I am delighted to present to Hackernoon readers my passion project with fellow Irish woman Lisa Gibbons (also an author on here). The passion project is to create the world’s first Irish Pub in the Metaverse and to launch it on Sandbox. It has taken more than a year to arrive at this place. Alpha Season 3 of The Sandbox concluded not too long ago. They drove a lot of players to the 90 different game experiences. During the 2 months, they had about 360k players, averaged 30k DAU, and average session length of 20 minutes. I tried all 90 experiences and here are my picks for the top 5. #5 Nine Chen’s Wonderland This was a multiplayer experience, and the game design revolved around exploring the map. All multiplayer maps are about exploring at this point in The Sandbox. It had great visuals and some really amazing assets, like the one shown above. #4 Lululand Lululand was another multiplayer experience with gorgeous landscapes full of hidden areas, perfect for exploration. Beyond that, they also implemented an innovative workaround to show ads inside The Sandbox. They created their own NFTs which allowed them to manually update the image metadata on IFPS. I noticed this after jumping into the experience on different days. In the same location, I noticed two different images. I knew that functionality wasn’t possible in The Sandbox so I dug into how this was done. Well done! #3 Sueco’s Split Personality This was a fun single-player game that used multiple game mechanics: trivia, mini-parkour, and a few fighting battles. If a game was created using just one of those mechanics, it would feel very grindy. I really like that those mechanics were used sparingly, making the game feel fresh. The quests were also well designed. One particular thing I liked about this experience was that when you finished one of the quests, you were immediately teleported to the scene of where the next quest would start. I also thought this was a very good brand integration as I still remember some of the details about Sueco. #2 The Walking Dead: Stay Alive This game experience was extremely on-brand. The Walking Dead universe is all about having limited resources, endless waves of walkers, and never about direct fighting with walkers. This game experience captured many of these things. Combat was indirect. Instead of fighting walkers head-on, the player has to trick them to walk into barbed wires, which would kill them. There wasn’t many unique assets that were created, which is fine. The quests were fun, but felt a bit long. That was the main reason why it didn’t get the number 1 spot. #1 Hanjin’s Music Palooza This was my favorite experience in Sandbox Season 3 by far. It was very fun, and had a Crossy Road feel. The game design used different elements like parkour, climbing, fighting, and some trivia. Again, had the full game been just parkour, or climbing it would have felt like a grind. Finishing a quest sent the player to another one nearby. It was very well thought out. I noticed this was a problem with many of the experiences in Season 3. A player would finish a quest, and then have to walk across the entire map to get to the next one. That’s where a large drop-off in players would occur. The developers of those experiences did their best based on the limited functionality of the GameMaker. The best multiplayer experiences thus relied on having great visuals and unique assets as was in the case of Nine Chen’s Wonderland, or a well-designed map for exploration as was in the case of Lululand. The best single player experiences were well-designed games. It had a good onboarding, the quests were fun, and were clearly playtested. If I got stuck on a part of a quest for more than a few minutes, I left the experience completely and didn’t come back. All in all, the future of The Sandbox is looking bright. My Top 5 Experiences in Alpha Season 3 of The Sandbox

I started my digital journey in 2002 when a 5-year-old kid got a PC on his birthday. I didn’t know much about technology at the time but games and movies were always my favorite. And then one fine day, a friend gave me a DVD containing a whole new gaming experience. It was GTA Vice City and the moment I started playing, I become a fan forever. But why, what was different about this game?? Why? Video Game summers got me playing Mario, Contra, Roadrash, and many more, but they were all designed to be played in a deterministic storyline. I was always constrained in what minimal I can choose to do apart from a decided path. The “awe” moment for Vice City was that I could do whatever I wanted in a whole city apart from the storyline. I could snatch other NPC cars, buy guns, rampage on roads, drive a tank, and the possibilities seemed limitless. Okay, What About Metaverse? To understand the metaverse, just extrapolate the same videogame - “Vice City”. Although the possibilities seemed limitless, there was a lot you couldn’t do, like - Reselling an estate, entering all buildings, creating new graffiti, playing with friends, and all the unlimited imaginative tasks one can think of. I visualize Vice City as the primitive metaverse, which Rockstar Games enhanced in their next-generation projects like GTA San Andreas, GTA V, GTA online, etc, but were still focused on the gaming community and their experience. The 3D world became more realistic and capable in features but was still built on the web2 native ideas. So What is the Metaverse? Simply stated Metaverse is the 3D extension of our digital life. Currently, we interact with our devices in a 2D space, scrolling for half a day on social media apps. Just think if you could actually enjoy the digital experience with a whole new understanding. With just a pair of VR headsets, one can visit his favorite destination, join the office team meet in 3D, enjoy a roller coaster, try on new Air Jordans, or even learn favorite subjects without leaving the comfort of a couch. With the current crypto trend, people often confuse Metaverse with Blockchain Technology, but the truth is that we don’t know how this next-generation internet will turn out to be. Many Metaverse projects solve different problems with the help of new cutting-edge technologies like AI, IoT, Blockchain, and web3, but they certainly need not adopt crypto every time. Enter Web3!! Now to understand this bit, we need to understand blockchain. Coming back to the GTA Vice City, it didn’t have any concept of NFT or digital assets, was it not a metaverse? Do we even need blockchain to enjoy the metaverse? To understand this we need to seek the benefits blockchain brings to the table. Starting with the concept of Bitcoin. It was created as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system without depending on any central intermediary, i.e. Decentralised. And almost a decade later thanks to the most popular altcoin in the space, Ethereum popularises the notion of smart contracts. With the help of these smart contracts, creators can now own and monetize their digital assets. Digital data is easily replicated, whether it be music, photograph, digital art, or even a piece of code, and proving the origin of any such content is extremely difficult. But with the help of smart contracts, anyone can convert their digital creation into an NFT (Non-Fungible Token). Simply put, this will help creators own their digital content and benefit from its intellectual rights. NFT + Metaverse Again in simple terms, NFTs help determine the custody of digital assets, and to think about it, metaverse has tonnes of digital assets. Leading projects like Decentraland and Sandbox offer these digital lands, estates, characters, and objects to their users, which can be accessed using crypto wallets. These assets can be transferred, sold, or rented using marketplaces like Opensea, Minatable, Magic Eden, etc. Also, users can create their own digital assets and unleash their imagination on the most advanced blank canvas. This completes the important piece of the puzzle by bringing back the power in the hands of the user community, i.e. decentralization. Future Of Internet Just imagine how much user data is exploited by social media companies, and all because of some greedy people making decisions for us. This could be changed with the decentralization nature of blockchain integrated with Metaverse. Facebook realizing the potential of the metaverse, quickly changed its branding to “Meta”, but would it really bring good by trusting the same people entering into the new Internet era? The Metaverse Story: From GTA Vice City to the Sandbox

The Sandbox is a gaming metaverse, a platform designed to promote creativity and experimentation in the digital world. It allows players to create worlds and characters that can be used to publish a game or virtual goods for users to purchase. The platform provides users with visual tools for creating 3D games, where they can shape the landscape in any way they want, design buildings and characters, and interact with our environment through their own personal objects. The Sandbox Metaverse has been operating since 2012. In the beginning, it was only available on iOS devices, and then first came on Android in February 2013. The Sandbox Game Engine, also known as The Sandbox Game Engine or TGE, is a free and open-source game engine. It is built for the educational and experimental purposes of developers, artists, and modders. The goal of the project is to provide free alternatives for those who want to create a 3D game without having to learn complex programming. The Sandbox Game Engine allows the development of games within a sandbox environment where users can shape any environment they want. In addition, it offers tools to develop various types of virtual items, such as clothes, weapons, and animals that serve as characters in the game. In June 2017, The Sandbox released an update for Game Maker, where players were given the opportunity to make their own games in 3D. All ASSETS and developments can be published on the platform. It is useful for players who are interested in monetizing their own NFTs. This update allowed not only the creation of a game but also the embedding of it in various web platforms: YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, etc. In September 2017, The Sandbox conducted a survey that showed that 42% of the registered users are game developers who want to create and monetize games, while 20% of them are artists who want to become game developers as well. There are many metaverses in Web3 with more springing up overnight. Some bright spark recently called the metaverse just space on someone’s computer (or more correctly computers) but on February 15, JP Morgan issued a report on metaverses which concluded by saying that the  metaverse will most likely infiltrate every sector in some way in the coming years, with the market opportunity estimated at $1 trillion in yearly revenues. It’s a bit loose on specifics but the report leaned much more heavily into the hype than reality (from the title of the report). Someone who knows first-hand the opportunities involved in the metaverse, before it was even given that common term, is Sebastien Borget, co-founder of Sandbox (TSB), arguably one of the most successful metaverses and certainly leading the pack in this increasingly crowded field. Today there are more than 2 million wallets registered to TSB, a growth of 1000% year on year. There are 18,500 LANDS owners, a 375% increase year to year. The current value of the TSB world based on the secondary market price is close to $1.5 bullion while the TSB marketcap is $3.3 billion and ranked #37 overall by total market cap, per . CoinMarketCap Borget himself comes from a gaming background. As a teenager he began playing video games and was hooked. “I really wanted to make my own video games but creating games on consoles was prohibitively expensive and you needed big teams and a publisher. It was out of my reach.” Then in 2011, he got his first smartphone and instantly realised it would be possible to create a mobile game with just one or two people. With his colleague and fellow games producer, Arthur Madrid, they founded Sandbox to allow game creators to develop their 2D pixelated characters and games. The platform was predicated on user generated content. “It took off. Over the next eight years we attracted 40 million installs and 70 million user generated worlds. And the game generated good revenue for the company. “So that made us happy, but we were also frustrated as we could not reward the creators of these worlds, these games, and typically they would leave after a year or so.” Then in 2017, Borget and Madrid found out about blockchain technology. “We tried playing crypto kitties. Now the breeding of new kitties was not new, but the fact that cats were NFT digital assets that could be owned, transferred outside the game and sold to other people – that made us sit up. Creators could now monetise their work outside the game.” This led to the precursor of . The concept was to take user generated content and NFTs and provide utility for those in a new platform. The ingredients were all there and we were able to piece them together with meaning, value and utility. Now we are focused on how we develop this form of entertainment. You can trade them without any issue, and you will find yourself quite amazed with the numerous features provided here. The Sandbox has a flexible voxel based engine. With this engine you are able to mint voxel creations as NFTs, and these can be vehicles, weapons, animals, plants and more. It’s a very nifty and cool concept, one that you will find to be enjoyable and very immersive. The Sandbox also has an avatar creation tool. What is Decentraland? Decentraland is the older of the two metaverses. The project started in and it’s made to be a very immersive and powerful metaverse which is fully 3D. Here any player is able to purchase land and also explore a massive world. 2017 On top of that, you can easily use the MANA coin they provide in order to get various LAND tokens. The coin can also be used to pay for wearables, avatars and all kinds of items. Sandbox vs. Decentraland Token price Generally, the Sandbox vs. Decentraland comparison will show that at least when it comes to tokens, their prices are and ( . So yes, this further shows that both projects are actually very similar to each other, yet they are constantly evolving. These prices are valid at the time of this writing. But due to the nature of each project, prices fluctuate quite a bit. Graphics/game content and partnerships Both Sandbox vs. Decentraland are going on to create various partnerships. They are focused on launching on consoles, mainly PS5 and Xbox as well. On top of that, they are looking to make the world a lot more immersive, with Sandbox actually thinking about adding things like in-game jobs. That’s a cool idea and a very interesting concept that will definitely attract a lot of people. Decentraland has a visual style focused on a combination of cartoony and realistic elements. It’s very similar to Roblox, which does make it quite impressive and engaging at the same time. They are constantly working on a variety of graphic elements and it certainly shows the clarity and uniqueness of the entire world and creativity involved here. The Sandbox on the other hand does a very good job at maintaining a voxel based graphics style. It’s similar to Trove and Minecraft, which is great because a lot of people are excited about this type of projects. The innovation here is incredible and it shows just how creative and impressive a world like this can actually be. Sandbox vs. Decentraland: Main Differences Decentraland has around 90601 parcels of land. These are grouped into plazas, districts, estates and individual parcels. Sandbox has 166464 land plots and you can group them into districts or estates. When it comes to Decentraland, you have MANA, WEAR and LAND Tokens. In the Sandbox you have 4 tokens, LAND, ASSETS, GAMES and SAND, with the latter one being the currency you can easily buy and sell. Each one has its own objective in the specific metaverse. Decentraland is backed by the Digital Currency Group, CoinFund and FBG Capital. Softbank is the largest backer for The Sandbox. You don’t need a wallet to explore Decentraland, but you need one if you want to earn anything or to acquire NFTs. You do need a wallet for Sandbox, and there are 3 wallets supported by them. There are also specific fees here too. For Decentraland, you have a 2.5% MANA cost, and this applies to all transactions. The Sandbox actually has a 5% fee applied to most transactions. And aside from that, both metaverses have their own transaction gas fee. so please DYOR before making any investments. Fees are subject to change, Conclusion In the Sandbox vs. Decentraland debate, which is the better option? It mostly depends on what you want and what you are interested in. We can safely say that both of them are great metaverses and they are constantly evolving. The fees can be quite high, which is a challenge. The Sandbox comes with better graphics, it’s also newer, and it has a detailed roadmap. However, Decentraland strives to be more complex. Both of them are great, it mostly depends on what you are interested in, and there’s something to like in both metaverses.

The metaverse as a concept is more popular than ever. Thanks to the push from huge companies such as Meta, more people are getting engrossed with the idea of living virtual lives in a virtual world. This push has brought with it massive platforms like The Sandbox, an online collection of games and setpieces built on blockchain technology. However, The Sandbox is far from the first platform to provide these features in the first place. Many people are probably much more familiar with , known for its thousands of user-created games and hangout spaces. Rather than following an exact timeline, the version of The Walking Dead featured in The Sandbox seems to be a collection of famous characters all together in one famous location. There are many aspects of this world that don’t line up with the hit TV series or other media. Even some characters that can be found in places like the novels or the show don’t reflect their Sandbox counterparts at all, though this might simply be a case of common names showing up in more places than one. It could be argued that this was done on purpose, though more critical fans might wonder if any writers involved in The Walking Dead had any input on this collaboration at all. The “Gameplay” of A Day in Alexandria Despite any arguments that can be made about A Day in Alexandria’s faithfulness, one can’t help but acknowledge how heavily it focuses on its writing. It’s especially a shame because there are many Sandbox worlds that offer a lot more than this, so to see such a grand franchise represented so poorly can only make one wonder where it all went so wrong. The Sandbox has numerous tools and resources to allow that creativity, but many of the official worlds don’t make use of them. It makes sense when considering worlds based around celebrities, but not with major franchises like The Walking Dead.
