Since its debut in 1996, Tomb Raider has cemented itself as a cornerstone in not just the video game industry but in pop culture in general. The hero of the series, Lara Croft, has become well-known even to those who don’t play video games.

But like seemingly every long-running series, there inevitably comes a reboot to revive the franchise, and Tomb Raider is no exception. This always seems to confuse people who want to get into the series, so here are the new Tomb Raider games in order.

Tomb Raider Games in Order

  1. Tomb Raider
  2. Rise of the Tomb Raider
  3. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

1. Tomb Raider (2013)

In 2013, the first game in a new trilogy was released; it was simply titled Tomb Raider. Since this was a reboot, the game was an origin story for Lara.

After the ship that she’s on crashes on a strange island, Lara is forced to survive in the wilderness. If that wasn’t bad enough, she also has to be careful of the people on the island.

Although Lara already has some exploring and survival skills, she’s inexperienced, and this is her first time diving into a life-or-death scenario. But she’ll have to adapt quickly because her life and the lives of her friends are all at stake.

In order for all of them to survive, Lara will have to discover the secret of the island and find a way to escape.

2. Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015)

In the sequel, Lara goes from a dangerous island adventure to an even more dangerous adventure in snow-filled Siberia. But just like in its predecessor, there are a lot of threats stacking up against our protagonist.

Rise of the Tomb Raider introduces Trinity, an organization hell-bent on achieving its goals, even if it means killing Lara. The organization is looking for a secret artifact, and Lara knows it’ll spell disaster if they get their hands on it.

So, it becomes a race against time to see who can get to it first.

3. Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)

In the final installment of the trilogy, it all comes together for Lara Croft. She’s been learning, gaining experience, and becoming wiser because of her previous adventures, but it’s in this one where she fully becomes the Tomb Raider.

Trinity is still alive and well after Siberia, and it’s still trying to complete its mission of collecting artifacts. But the stakes are much higher this time; higher than ever before. Because it’s not just Laura’s life at stake but the rest of the world as well.

So, for this trilogy’s final adventure, Lara goes all out and ends it with a bang. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a fitting conclusion, and players who followed Lara through her journey won’t be disappointed.
