Python provides many useful libraries and functions to work with strings. Sometimes, you may need to split a string at every Nth character. It can be tedious to loop through the string and extract substrings, one at a time. In this article, we will learn three simple ways to quickly split a string into substrings of N consecutive characters each. Let us say you have the following string in Python. s = '1234567890' Let us say you want to split it after every two characters. ['12','34','56','78','90'] Here are three ways to split the string as per our requirement: Using List Comprehension

Using Regular Expression 1. Using List Comprehension In this approach, we use list comprehension along with indexes to get a list of substrings. >>> S = '1234567890'

['12', '34', '56', '78', '90'] In the above code, we use range() function in list comprehension, with three arguments. The first one is 0. The second argument is the length of the string. The third argument is the step n. In our case, n=2. So the range() function returns a list of [0, n, 2n, 3n,…]. We loop through this list, using its items as list indexes. In other words, we extract substrings from original string, between index i and i+n, where i takes the values 0, n, 2n, … from output of range() function. You can include it in a function, as shown below. def split_n(s, n):

But let's say you were searching for a pirate's hidden treasure and you had a map that didn't show the exact location, but you knew it was somewhere around the Caribbean. That's why you should start looking at where the pirate lived to collect clues. For example, Barbarossa was Turkish, so maybe you should visit Turkey to gather clues. The same is true with programming. Only practicing your coding skills will get you nowhere; you will just become a good employee, and that's all. You should start looking to other places where people haven't searched which will implicitly improve your coding skills. Mental Toughness As much as "mental toughness" might seem obscure, keep reading to better understand my point. Developers often talk about impostor syndrome or burnout, and if you are a developer yourself, you might have experienced it. Even if you have not experienced it yet, your brain will stop working after a few hours of coding. Imagine now that you never had any problems and you could code nonstop and have infinite inspiration. This is what happened to me when I started training my mental toughness. Training can come from other things. Stop playing video games and read books instead; this will give you discipline. Not wasting time-consuming content on social media, and instead, creating content will strengthen your mind. Stop masturbating every time you see an OF girl on Reddit or Instagram; this will toughen your mind to a point where things like impostor syndrome and burnout will cease to exist. Inspiration I know sun exposure can be difficult in some countries. But even in the UK where the sun is barely seen getting out each morning for 30-40, reading a book in the daylight can give you inspiration and motivation. Inspiration is really important when it comes to coding; we get it by doing things that have no connection with the thing we are working on. The most inspiration you will get is from trips to other places or countries. Half my time coding, I spent outside in the summer. Even now, I am writing this article outside. Body Strength "Mens sana in corpore sano" - A healthy mind is in a healthy body. But this works vice versa as well. Of course, as developers, we work on our minds all the time, but most developers have weak bodies. Exercising and going to the gym can give you the mental energy you need to solve complex problems and think outside the box. Exercising doesn't mean going to the gym for 3 hours every day. But 30-40 minutes of working out daily and 2-3 hours of cardio each week can do the job. Now that I am in a place where the nearest gym is 10 miles away, I do pushups all day. Daily 200-300 and running once every few days. That said, you don't even need a gym to work out; just do pushups. Imagine an AI-generated Albert Einstein teaching a physics lesson; this would captivate students and make learning more memorable. The technology required to implement AI-driven educational tools is often already present in schools; it's just a matter of application. Incorporating AI, even if initially for a single subject as a pilot program, can demonstrate its benefits and feasibility, paving the way for broader adoption. 3. Introduction JavaScript is a single-threaded, popular, and commonly used programming language. So, besides coding in JavaScript, we should know how the code runs internally. In this article, we will be looking through the steps and understand the internal code execution in JavaScript. So, let's dive into it!! What is Execution Context? Execution context is a fundamental topic in JavaScript which refers to the scope or environment in which the JavaScript code is evaluated and executed. Whenever any code runs in JavaScript, it runs inside the execution context. Its Importance Understanding the execution context is important as it helps us to understand the variable accessibility(i.e., the scope of the variables in the code), the value of 'this' keyword which is often misunderstood, and the concept of Hoisting. Types of Execution Context There are three types of execution context: Global Execution Context

Eval Function Execution Context Now, let's dive into the main content and look into the creation of execution context. Creation of Execution Context When a code is run in JavaScript, at first, a global execution context is created. The global execution context is allocated to 'this' variable. After that, the creation of the execution context consists of two phases: The Creation phase and the Code Execution Phase. The JS code runs in two phases Not clear enough? Let's understand these phases and the whole process of code execution through an example and diagrams. Let's have a look at a simple code let num1 = 50;

let result= product(num1 , num2); While running the code, at first, a global execution context is created which is referred to this variable. In the browser, the value of this is the "window" object. All the further execution contexts are created inside this Global execution context. As JavaScript is a single-threaded language, everything inside it works in a definite process. Now, after the creation of the Global execution context, the code execution takes place. In JS, the code execution takes place in two steps, the first is the memory creation phase in which the variables are declared and allocated memory. The second one is the code execution phase in which the variables are assigned their value and the code is run line by line. Memory Creation Phase In this phase, declaration and memory allocation of variables take place within the execution context but are not initialized or assigned any value. In the above example, in the memory creation phase, at first, variables num1 and then num2 are declared which is initialized with the value undefined. After that, the function product is declared which contains the function definition, and lastly, the variable result is declared which contains the value undefined. Here comes the concept of "Hoisting." Hoisting is a JS mechanism where variables and function declarations are moved to the top of their containing scope in the compilation phase even before the execution of the code. Thus, these variables are hoisted to the top of their scopes. Now, let's look into the next phase, i.e., the Execution phase. Execution Phase After the variables are declared, the first half of execution is completed. Now, here starts the code execution phase. In the execution phase, all the declared variables are initialized with the values, and the code is executed line by line. In the above example, during the execution phase at first num1 is initialized with the value, i.e., 50, and similarly, num2 is initialized with 100. Following that the function product is called and for that function, a new function execution context is created consisting of a new variable environment and execution thread. (Refer to the following image for better understanding). The function is also executed similarly in two phases inside the function execution context until it returns the value to the Global execution context. Function Execution Context: In the memory creation phase val1, val2and ans are declared consecutively and are initialized with undefined. After that, the execution phase val1 is initialized with the value 50 as val1= num1. Similarly, val2= 100 as val2=num2. In the next step, ans is evaluated as ans= val1*val2 and assigned with the value 5000. After it returns the value to the global execution context, the function execution context is deleted. In the next step, the returned value by the function is assigned to the result variable, and the output is given. Now, the execution of the code is completed. After completion, the whole execution context is destroyed. There is also a concept called Call Stack. It is a mechanism that keeps track of the functions being called, which are being executed, and which are in queue to be executed one after another. It follows the LIFO principle (i.e., Last In First Out principle). The function called at the last is added to the top of the list and after its execution, it is popped out. One of the most repeated questions I get is: how do I evaluate whether I should join an early seed-stage startup? Embarking on a journey with a startup is akin to taking a leap of faith. While there's no guarantee of success, conducting due diligence can significantly mitigate risks. Having been in such a position a couple of times myself, I wanted to share the framework I use that may help you make your decision. For a quick background, the first startup I joined after my undergrad, MIME360, was acquired by Flipkart to build out its digital store. The four years I worked at Flipkart, it went through a hyper-growth phase to become India's biggest eCommerce company. After doing my Masters in Computer Science from Columbia University, I was fortunate to find another set of high performers with TellApart. TellApart ended up being Twitter's biggest acquisition, and I was fortunate to be part of that journey too. After spending 6 years building ad products at Twitter, I wanted to get back to early-stage companies, which led me to join Frec as a founding engineer. Frec is a fintech startup, democratizing complex financial instruments which were previously accessible to a wealthy few. Unlike MIME360 and TellApart, where I was very early in my career and also just at the right place at the right time, Frec was a very intentional decision. I had worked with some of the other founding engineers before, so I was confident the team was capable of executing. Josh McFarland (TellApart founder) was the lead investor from Greylock, so that was another huge vote of confidence. When I spoke to Mo Al Adham, the founder of Frec, his thoughts about the team and product-market fit complimented mine, and I was convinced I was making the right decision. Given my prior experience with small and medium-sized start-ups, some of my friends/colleagues reach out to me to help evaluate a startup they’re considering joining. Joining a new company is a big step, both personally and professionally. Making an informed decision is much easier with public companies since a lot of resources/metrics that you might need are already available like revenue growth, median salary for your role, opinion of current and past employees, etc. Such data is generally not available for most startups, especially the early-stage ones (pre-series B) which makes it quite a risky prospect. We know start-ups are inherently hard, and while there is no guarantee of success, you can definitely mitigate some risk by doing your own due diligence. Most start-ups are aware of this and are willing to share information with potential employees within reasonable limits. It's essential to remember that joining a startup is not just about being hired; it's a mutual exploration where you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. Before saying yes to joining a startup, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of what you aim to gain from the experience. With the hope that it can help others as well, I am sharing some of the things I considered when making my decision to join Frec. Product Understanding the product is fundamental as it forms the cornerstone of the startup's existence. What problem are you trying to solve? What positions you to best solve this problem? Do you have product-market fit (PMF)? If not, what does PMF look like to you? In other words, what metrics will convince you that you've attained PMF? Who are your primary competitors, and what differentiates you from them? What is the biggest pain point for your product/customers right now? Who is the target audience?

As a side note, it always helps if it’s a product you believe you will actually use (now or in the future) Company Evaluating the company's overall health and trajectory is vital for long-term commitment. You don't want to join a company for 6 months for it to run out of money. These questions will help evaluate the health of the company and what are their plans for the next 1-2 years. What's your burn rate and what are your future funding plans? Alternate: What is the current runway?
How much is the current revenue (if any)? Future plans for revenue streams? Team The dynamics and cohesion within the team can significantly impact your experience and success within the startup. Even if there is no financial success, you can still gain a lot by working with a high-performing team. Has anyone already left the company, and if so, why?
How do you facilitate onboarding for new team members?
How do people collaborate and resolve conflicts within the team?
What is the company’s policy on remote or flexible work?
How often do people work from the office? (This might have a significant impact on your decision as well. Early in your career, you want to work with people in the office as much as possible) Founder Understanding the vision and leadership style of the founder(s) can provide insights into the startup's direction. Is this the founder’s first startup or do they have previous exits?


Note: Founders with previous exists (IPO/acquisitions) have done it before and know the recipe well.



For solo founders: Why do it solo considering the percentage of success from solo founders is less? How does the founder brainstorm ideas? For multiple founders: How are conflicts resolved, and how are decisions made? Investors The motivations behind investor backing can shed light on the perceived potential of the startup from a third party. A lot of times startups will let you talk to their investors too. If you’ve already cleared the interviews, then they'll try hard to sell you. You should research the quality of investors backing the company, their past bets, success rate, etc. Why did the investors choose to invest in the founder/company? Are they betting on the team or the product?

Is the press related to the investment? Role Clarifying your role and expectations ensures alignment between personal growth and company objectives. For technical roles, understanding the technological landscape is crucial. A lot of times I’ve seen engineers burnt out by simply using bad tools for the job. How does my role contribute to improving the product?
What does success look like in this role, and how will I be measured? Alternate: Who is your ideal candidate?
What is the technology stack?
What processes are in place for planning, testing, and code reviews?
What is the on-call rotation like? How is deployment managed? As you might have noticed, we're intentionally skipping compensation/benefits in this set of questions, since it can be a post on its own. Not to mention startup compensation gets really complex with ISOs, options, PPU, 409a evaluation, strike price, exercise price, etc. Another aspect not covered that might be crucial to you is immigration-related questions in case you need a work visa. Remember, this isn't meant to be a comprehensive list. You might care about some criteria more than others. By asking the right questions and delving deep into various aspects of the startup, you can make an informed choice that aligns with your career goals and aspirations. When I spoke to Mo Al Adham, the founder of Frec, his thoughts about the team and product-market fit complimented mine, and I was convinced I was making the right decision. Given my prior experience with small and medium-sized start-ups, some of my friends/colleagues reach out to me to help evaluate a startup they’re considering joining. Joining a new company is a big step, both personally and professionally. Making an informed decision is much easier with public companies since a lot of resources/metrics that you might need are already available like revenue growth, median salary for your role, opinion of current and past employees, etc. Such data is generally not available for most startups, especially the early-stage ones (pre-series B) which makes it quite a risky prospect. We know start-ups are inherently hard, and while there is no guarantee of success, you can definitely mitigate some risk by doing your own due diligence. Most start-ups are aware of this and are willing to share information with potential employees within reasonable limits. It's essential to remember that joining a startup is not just about being hired; it's a mutual exploration where you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. Before saying yes to joining a startup, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of what you aim to gain from the experience. With the hope that it can help others as well, I am sharing some of the things I considered when making my decision to join Frec.
