London Launched the First Emergency Phone Service
1937On June 30, 1937, the world's first emergency call telephone service was launched in London using the number 999. This service was introduced following a tragedy in 1935 when a woman died because an ambulance could not be called in time. The new service allowed anyone in the London area to call for emergency services by dialing 999, and it was soon adopted by other cities in the United Kingdom. Today, the 999 emergency number is still in use in the UK, although in some areas it has been replaced by 112, the European Union's standard emergency number.
Germany's Heinkel He 176 Took Its Maiden Flight
1939In the late 1930s, the German company Heinkel Flugzeugwerke designed and built an experimental aircraft that would become an important milestone in aviation history. The Heinkel He 176 rocket plane was powered by a liquid-fueled rocket engine and was intended to be a prototype for a new generation of high-speed military aircraft. On June 30, 1939, the He 176 took to the skies for the first time at the Peenemunde testing facility. The aircraft was flown by its designer, Ernst Heinkel, and quickly set a new world speed record for a piloted aircraft, reaching a height of around 3,000 feet and a speed of 342 miles per hour.
