Gigantic fighting games filled with fun crossovers and surprising guest characters aren’t unheard of. The original Super Smash Bros. game was a Nintendo fan’s biggest dream because it saw the company’s biggest franchises clash together. Everyone from Mario to Link to Samus was in the game.

Many years later, we’re still seeing companies make fighting games using different properties and characters they own. In 2012, Sony released PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, a fighting game featuring a slew of PlayStation characters. And just last year, Nickelodeon released Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

Now, it’s time for Warner Bros. to give it a shot. They’re making the fighting game, MultiVersus, which might have the most mismatched group of characters ever. The game sounds like a fever dream someone would have after they fell asleep watching TV. However, the gameplay seems fun, the roster is ridiculous, and MultiVersus has the potential to be a great game.

With all of the information coming out about the game, it could get overwhelming trying to figure out what it’s about. So, here are all the details we know so far about the MultiVersus roster, its gameplay, and its release.

MultiVersus Gameplay

The most important detail to know about MultiVersus is what type of game it is. Developed by Player First Games, it was announced that it will be free-to-play. Although, there will be things in-game that players can purchase. This is stated on the game’s official FAQ page, where they release plenty of more info about MultiVersus.

Like Super Smash Bros., it will be a platform fighting game. Do enough damage to your opponents and knock them out of the arena. The FAQ page says that some of the game modes will include a free-for-all (with up to 4 people), a 2 vs. 2 mode, and a one-on-one mode.

And for those wondering, you will be able to play online with others. Which, according to the FAQ page, “MultiVersus will introduce a team-based 2 vs. 2 format with a strong emphasis on online cooperative gameplay.”

Online gameplay for fighting games can often be hit or miss, but the fact that they are actively saying they want it to be a big part of the game seems like a good sign.

MultiVersus Roster

Okay, so the gameplay seems solid, and the idea of having online modes be actively supported is great. But none of that matters if the characters aren’t cool. Well, this is Warner Bros. that we’re talking about. They have so many characters that it’s hard to keep track of which ones fall under their corporate umbrella, and as it turns out, that umbrella is pretty big.

Pretty much anyone you would ever want in the game is in it. Characters from DC Comics, Hanna-Barbera, and Cartoon Network are confirmed to be in the game. This includes Batman and Superman, Shaggy and Velma, and Garnet and Steven Universe.

From the website’s roster page, you can see the rest of the confirmed characters. From Looney Tunes to Game of Thrones, a ton of Warner Bros. properties are represented.

The second thing we can see is that each character also has an icon on their portrait. This is to signify that the MultiVersus roster is broken up into classes. Shaggy and Batman are bruisers, Arya Stark and Harley Quinn are assassins, and Velma and Steven Universe are support; this goes back to the idea of the game focusing on team-based gameplay.

Even though these characters might have different classes, and they might come from different franchises, there’s something that they have in common: iconic voices. MultiVersus brings back a ton of actors to voice these characters once again.

Kevin Conroy returns as Batman, a character he has been voicing since Batman: The Animated Series. Other actors that are returning include Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Estelle as Garnet, and John DiMaggioas Jake the Dog.

The MultiVersus roster is shaping up to be a great one, but there’s more to come. When the game is released, we’ll see an even bigger roster. Speaking of the game’s release:

MultiVersus Release Info

Although there has been no specific date on when the game will come out, we know that it’s confirmed for 2022. There has been a slew of video games that have been pushed back to 2023, but hopefully, MultiVersus won’t need the additional time.

The second thing we know about its release is that it will be available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and on PC. This is straight from the website’s mouth, and they also confirm that the game will have cross-play. This means that players with different consoles can still play with each other.

This game seemed too outrageous to exist when it was first announced, but now, players are waiting in anticipation for more news. Everything from the MultiVersus roster to the gameplay seems like a blast, and we’re counting down the days till we experience this wacky world.
