Learn more about my thoughts and opinions on blockchain, Web 3, and Play to Earn gaming and my journey in the tech industry via the interview below. 1. Tell us about your journey. What do you do and what do you love about it? I became interested in blockchain technology in 2012 when I first discovered Bitcoin. Over the years I’ve been a part of creating or helping to launch multiple projects in the industry geared towards lowering the barrier to entry for people that are not familiar with the technology. Currently I’m working with Splinterlands to help bring blockchain and cryptocurrency mainstream through easy to use gaming applications. 2. Tell us more about your work. What do you make/write/manage/build? We build Play to Earn blockchain based games. Part of that process requires writing out whitepapers and technical documentation, but the philosophy behind it all is just as important and that often shines through as well. We’re currently managing multiple ongoing projects and partnerships to help bridge the gap between Web 2 and Web 3 users. 3. How did you start writing? What made you choose HackerNoon for publishing your work? Splinterlands operates on the HIVE blockchain, which has writing and blogging as a core design of the blockchain, offering users immutable and censorship-resistant avenues for free speech. Quite a few of our employees follow HackerNoon and read the articles. We were very excited to win Blockchain Game Developer of the Year last year! 4. What excites you in tech? Tell us about your favorite technology and why you are passionate about it. The most exciting thing in tech right now is the fundamental shift that is happening with Web 3 and blockchain technology. It seems that many people throw around terms like these as buzzwords, but the underlying philosophy of self-ownership and decentralized, community-led governance has the power to change the world. Instead of siphoning wealth from individuals, this new technology allows companies like ours to create value with our communities and to then empower them with the ability to influence the direction of development for years to come! 5. What were some of the challenges you faced being a tech writer and how did you overcome them? Over the last 10 years I’ve had to learn about blockchain technology as it developed and learning how to communicate the complex ideas and mechanics behind the technology to people that may not understand the value of it has been the most challenging. At Splinterlands, we believe that the best route to onboarding the masses to Web 3 is to provide an easy user-experience with clear messaging and solid technology that is reliable and affordable. We utilize human readable account names on a blockchain with multiple tiers of wallet keys for additional security and the free, 3 second transactions provide for a smooth user experience. 6. What are you learning/reading currently? Any recommendations for our readers? Staying up to date with industry articles and blogs, like you can find on HackerNoon, is very important to anyone passionate about the industry. We’re always following developments from many sources and staying up to date on new advancements in smart contracts, DeFi, DAOs, and new blockchains and consensus mechanisms that are in the works. We view the industry as a whole as a collaborative space that is working to build a better future with greater opportunities for all through technology. 7. What is your biggest achievement so far? Splinterlands has had so many massive achievements at this point and they are all very humbling. Becoming the top played blockchain game in the world for most of the last year has been very encouraging and drives us to want to do more for our community. We’ve partnered with major brands like Warner Music Group and MLSPA to help even more diverse groups make the transition to Web 3. We also just crossed the 3 billion games played threshold yesterday. There have been many achievements so far, but we’re looking forward to what we can do next! 8. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? At this point, educational marketing and developing more streamlined user experiences that lower the barrier to entry and reduce the stigma that blockchains are clunky, slow and impractical is the smartest investment this industry as a whole could make. We believe that this would have the greatest impact on the industry, but also it helps destigmatize NFTs and blockchain gaming by educating users on the power of true ownership of digital assets and censorship resistant technologies. 9. What advice would you give to someone just starting in this field? Follow the passion, not the trends. Blockchain and Web 3 have the power to change the world for the better, but no technology is perfect. If this is something you’re sincerely passionate about, research everything you can, learn as much as you can, and don’t be afraid to try. Support projects you believe in. We’re all in this together! 10. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? There is no failure, we give up or we learn until we succeed. As long as we’re willing to try and we’re open to improvement, we can keep doing bigger and better things. Splinterlands and Play to Earn Blockchain Based Games: Noonies 2022 Interview

While HackerNoon has reviewed the story for quality, the claims hereon belong to the author. #DYOR Splinterlands to Provide Validator Nodes With New License Offering , one of the most prominent play-to-earn (P2E) games, is to transition to Splintershards (SPS) validator nodes to provide a decentralized validator network for validating network transactions with 1$ billion burn and rewards. The SPS Validator node software is projected to go live on the main net in the third or fourth quarter of 2022. Splinterlands scheduled The SPS validator software will be open-source, allowing anyone to download, install, and use it without any additional expenses or limitations, although node licences will be obtained through SPS payment. It will first be available as a "docker container" for Linux workstations, with Windows and MacOS versions following soon after. The node software is now undergoing internal testing, with the mainnet expected to deploy in the fourth quarter of 2022. Participants who want to be a part of the new initiative might buy validator node licences at a later date. Matt Rosen, Founder & CPO of Splinterlands, said: There will be a governance system that will work through Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS). It's very similar to Hive, BSC, and EOS. Like Gala Nodes, our SPS Node will help us secure the Splinterlands Network. So, people who own the SPS token will have voting rights and can elect entities to validate all SPS transactions. We believe this is beneficial for both users and validators. We'll have a system that puts the community first. Akin to other prominent networks like Binance Smart Chain, EOS, and Hive, the SPS governance mechanism will leverage the DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake) consensus methodology. Thus, any account holding staked SPS tokens will be qualified to vote for validator node accounts to select additional individuals or businesses accountable for verifying all SPS transactions and administering the SPS foundation money. In other words, the more staked SPS a validator has, the more blocks they will be awarded, and the larger their payouts will be. Nevertheless, only a limited volume of accounts may earn the largest number of votes, and thus the majority of the prizes, in the process mentioned above. The Splinterlands team will introduce "licences," which will let all customers obtain rewards for operating nodes without having any staked SPS votes. These SPS licences are available for purchase using a mix of SPS and VOUCHER tokens. Additionally, 80% of the SPS tokens and 100% of the VOUCHER tokens used to purchase node licences will be burnt. When the 3 billion SPS token maximum is met, the residual 20% of SPS tokens will be transferred to the SPS Foundation and utilised to reward SPS validator nodes. Splinterlands will release 60,000 licences in numerous phases, with the value of each phase escalating as the game progresses. Our goal was to make something where someone who plays similar games would say "Hey, that look just like (some other trading card game I play)," and then after spending 5 minutes say "woah, this is totally different."  Many of the mainstream games are turn by turn.  We're autoplay.  A mainstream game takes 20-40 minutes to play.  We take 2-3. We built Splinterlands because we think gaming is a natural transition to crypto.  A gamer is already familiar with computers, hardware, and usually multiple currencies and inventory.  All that's changed with crypto is that you now own it all and can sell it when you're done. Splinterlands has gone to great lengths to make it as easy to transition from traditional games to blockchain games.  In many games you have to own crypto first to be able to play.  For a new person in the USA that means going to Coinbase, purchasing ETH, downloading metamask, transferring eth and then registering.  It's a huge lift.  We just ask for a username and password and folks can pay with a credit card. If you're talking about national franchises will millions of followers you're talking about billions or trillions of transactions per year.  That's a big database and scaling is really the most central issue going forward. Hearthstone is a great and really fun game, and if we try to duplicate it on a fraction of the budget, with a fraction of the team, and a fraction of the experience we're going to have a hard time competing.  So, our game is and always has been to create a game that looks and feels like trading card games that people grew up with, but that play entirely differently.  Familiar enough to be recognizable, but different enough to be something entirely different than what they've experienced in their gaming. Four months later after my ongoing adventure with blockchain Technology, I finally come across a book , an American Writer. This book I can't say(for sure) my mind; Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson blew (1) Maybe because I already knew what the content entailed before advancing to reading it,
(2) Or because I strongly believe that imagination of unknown worlds are realities unforeseen, uncreated, yet. ; One man conceived a Metaverse world in 1992 and of that world is taking shape as a reality today - That is exactly what keeps nagging at my mind. The summary of it all is this every feature Fortunately, this is not what this post is gonna be about. I wanted to include my experience with Snow Crash as a way to divulge into the Metaverse Term without sounding too cliche or like a sole boat joining in on the party. A Blockchain Story - Introduction to Rubbing Elbows with Blockchain What does the Blockchain GameFi world Entail?, How does one find their way amongst all the Noise? Are you here for just the thrill or is there something deeper you are searching for? Strangely enough, I think that my experience and adventure in the blockchain Play2earn world has further enabled me to discover myself(at least an important piece of myself), how the finance world works in general, how to handle money, and eventually what being around money really feels like. It's an exhilarating experience that I'm sure every one of us here(in the space) or . This experience has touched me deeply in a way that I feel obligated and committed to expanding tangible information about the whole process involved to others just getting started. experiences continuously at one time or another Most of us here, doing what we do, are driven by passion - either from games, social interaction, or maybe just the flipping around of tokens. So, I was thinking recently, how do people who are less aware of the techniques and have no background logic advance in this Gamefi space? My first instinct might be to say; So long! this isn't the space for you, find somewhere more suited to your vibration! Have you considered photography? xD. But then, when looking at the bigger picture I realized that; This space we have in motion - Blockchain Tech, Web 3.0, Decentralized Finance & Ecosystem, Metaverse world, etc should be reserved for just the people with a technical drive in the inner workings or previous background with blockchain and crypto, because NOT Social Interaction should be for everyone, Managing your Personal Data should be for all, Marching into the future Internet with Web 3.0 should be for all, and finally, The Metaverse is gonna be for all. A Blockchain Story - My Personal Interaction with Blockchain Tech The first time I heard about Axie Infinity funnily enough was way back in April 2021, I read an article about NFTs games and how you could literally earn from them. I arrived on the Axie Infinity marketplace and I can seeing Axies priced at less than $100. It said that I needed three Axies to start playing and although I thought this was a fair deal, I didn't have the funds readily available for this, furthermore, (That was the most limiting, to just think about it right now Ugh). vaguely remember I had absolutely no idea how to transfer cash from my Mom's bank to Axie Marketplace My second attempt with the Blockchain Space was with NFTs, I had somehow learned about also in April, and since I am a huge football fan, I thought that I could have fun playing this game while earning (Uh, That was my main goal back then). If I remember correctly, it was from this exact post - on the Trust wallet Site. This got me so excited about Trust wallet and I started browsing through the various Dapps on it. I found out about the idea of minting artworks on Trustwallet Dapps like , and decided to give it a shot because I had a couple of Artworks to upload(created with Blender), I was stumped yet again with the . Too bad though, I got off from it all to face other pressing matters in my life. 5 Months Later - marked the day I would begin a . When I think back now, it feels almost just like a script out of a movie. It's like... Click Click ... . Because the situation in which I got a rekindled awareness and enthusiasm was totally unexpected because I literally did not go searching for it, rather it came to me. No doubt, that day marks the entire turning point of my life --- . August 28, 2021, 2.0 version of my exploration with Blockchain and Play2Earn Ecosystem Now you can start your adventure In an extremely positive way - Splinterlands And AxieInfinity The two most popular games in the Play2Earn Ecosystem, and I've been lucky enough to play them both. , a couple of Reddit posts came in very handy, By the time I was already conversant with Crypto transactions which were essential in transferring over crypto-payment for the great summoners book, to properly kickstart my earnings adventure in Splinterlands. Getting on Splinterlands was fairly easy for me . I can't express fully how I felt when I was in the Axie Infinity world, whether through their Reddit or Discord Channels. The prices for a starter team were ridiculous and I was pained at why I couldn't take up the opportunity during April when I first found out about it when the community hadn't yet exploded which made things just super oppressive. It taught me a great truth and lesson about the crypto world - . And justifying those regrets is the best way to move forward. Axie Infinity was most difficult to get into You are always gonna have regrets What I did back then And I've done ever since when faced with crippling is to tell myself this - [Had I Known situations] (1) I couldn't predict that this would turn out like this because I'm human (2) If I had the chances in my favor (time, money, risk factor) no doubt I would have savaged this opportunity. The Axie Infinity community felt oppressive, more so because of the huge noise on how people were making millions from it - Buying houses, cars, and other shit. My plan was to get in as a scholar since I had no way of affording the huge starter fee. The scholarship route CAN be a nightmare, Gosh, It began to dawn on me and I started to feel sick at some point. The number of scholars on the waitlist, , they could even take a cut of 30 - 70(in the manager's favor) if it just means they get accepted. ready to do anything to get into Axie Infinity(not literally) After sending my information manually to several "supposed" managers, I started feeling uncomfortable with the idea of sharing my information so freely with strangers. They ask a bunch of questions in a google docs file and you gotta answer them. A site is created so that players can reach out to Managers in one sitting, and while I didn't think it effective ( ), I filled in mine regardless, and Lo', , In the least way I expected, on a day that Axie Infinity was already out of my mind. Of course Not, silly Question But the Play2Earn Industry is just getting Started… And with that In mind, I kept telling myself that It was gonna be a rollercoaster in the coming months. When you go on dedicated Play2Earn communities on Reddit and Discord, you are getting filled in with huge amounts of Information. With the explosion of Axie Infinity in value, people in the space and psyched-up newcomers are aware of the life-changing, and wallet-wrecking opportunities (if I can call it that) that exist. One month in from August 2021, when my Play2Earn adventure began, I felt totally out of my mind(completely disorientated). I gather that a lot of folks felt the same way, as I did. Let me try and explain it in more verbal terms; I was feeling a lot of pressure , and furthermore, I knew they ridiculous, but here were people hyping it up and claiming the hundreds and thousands they were making from it. with the information I found online the amount of play2earn games that kept popping up was ridiculous looked I was in this space to earn money after all, and so it was hectic trying to process all that information. In fact, I was asking all these questions because I felt that I should get up to speed(ASAP) about the space being a noob and all, so I don't miss out on future opportunities; My Mind rattled with the following questions, and DID it help that I saw similar questions from other folks? Question 1 - How can I earn without Investing money?, I selfishly think that the thriving ecosystem of Play2Earn Games can be able to fend for some rewards that should be distributed rightfully to me (Pun Intended) Free Play2Earn Games Question 2 from playing and , in 2 weeks? How much realistically can I earn Splinterlands Axie Infinity Question 3 , I don't get that kind of entry Cash anywhere, what other games have an ecosystem or are currently on the rise? Ok guys alas I'm late to Axie Infinity projected to upscale My Answer to Question 1 You know what, in less than my entire four months journey with play2earn gaming, I came to realize that; If your goal is to enjoy and derive pleasure from playing blockchain games, don't even bother. Why? (1) aren't Enjoyable Majority of the Games (2) It would be difficult to find a truly enjoyable game, making it better to leave it up to chance OR give the time the industry needs to mature. That being said, it also doesn't mean there aren't games out there that can retain some user's attention, there are of course, but when I say , Nuh-uh. Addictive Games that you can lose urself in? On the other hand, if your goal is to make money by playing free-to-play games(games not requiring an initial cash investment), It's a grey area, because yeah, One game, in particular, has so far changed this status, and links are shared at the end of this post, so you can explore the Game in question. My Answer to Question 2 I saw a lot of hazy answers on this, but NONE were really suited to my unique situation. At the same time, they could work splendidly in a different scenario at the end of the day. what if the prices of the tokens fluctuate negatively the moment I start playing My Answer to Question 3 I see this question A LOT, and I mean it's only logical, people are searching for the next opportunities and they want to make sure not to miss out. This question was constantly in my head and propelled me to search far and wide, filtering through ALL Play2Earn Games I could come across, hoping for when I could run into a game early on that is to Explode. The sad truth that has finally dwelled on me is that; The same thing we saw with Axie would never (necessarily) happen in the same way it did, it's like the world is programmed in such a way, Skeptical Analysts refer to them as Black Swans, . SET Unpredictable events that happen when no one is ready, and never happen again (because everyone is ready) The Logical-Abstract Main reason Axie grew explosively was that it had a healthy economy that was not at its heels to drain the game of incentives, , it went through a transition period of , , , up until , and the Community saw this as a Blessing(before it was even captured in the media). Now that people are ready waiting, people are ready to plunge, cash out and drain any community that grows exponentially right under their eyes, , it's the BEST Example there is. Thinking in terms of Technology that we have available today, Although once better bridging tech becomes available, we are fully capable of making that giant leap My expectations for the Metaverse are very simple, - "A Meta World like but with more crazy spice. Somnium Space Somnium Space with Custom Avatars that can be in any form you choose Avatars that can make interactive movements and Dance fluidly(work it, work it, work it Lol) Somnium Space with Mall buildings in different worlds and people transacting openly The Mall is filled with personal business, posters, gaming hubs, services like (elevators, escalators, barbers, teleporters) all in one Big jumble of Digital EcoMarket. Somnium Space with a [Medium of VR] that is very comfortable and convenient. Hey, stop thinking in terms of Headsets for a Bit? Cause you just never know Somnium space with . We already have such a tech available today so don't feel too sorry for me, LOL. I choose to stop right here before I get too wired up. Digital Tech Controlling with the Brain Roadblocks Ah, the Roadblocks are plenty. But like I said, One creative door opens another; 1. Price of Metaverse Assets It's no doubt that the immense ecosystem of Metaverse Worlds would cause them to be very expensive - at least for to have a shot conveniently. If there is a very high demand (as I expect there would), there would be a crazy price attached to the Assets in a Metaverse. majority of users For example, During land sale periods, people who grab them at that price are almost guaranteed of making back their initial investments plus loads of profit when they sell in the future because, then the World has gained popularity = more traction = higher demands. It is sad to see these same projections happening in , , , etc. Especially for the last two, the prices are just plain crazy and they happen to have the highest quality games in the industry today. This Early Adopter syndrome is a competitive Race but too bad that's just the way markets work, The Sandbox Gala Games Mobux Ecosystem Low Demands = Buy Low High Demands = Sell High AND ViceVersa 2. VR Hardware and PC GPU Requirements This is gonna be a big hurdle in front of the Metaverse and until this issue is solved, the Meta-VR Gaming World would fail to go mainstream. Look at Facebook(Now Meta, but consider Their FB App) for Example, with about , why do you think this is so? Surely NOT because Facebook is an Attractive App, Hell no! But because it's available to a large mass of the world and literally has access to mobile devices. 3 billion users 84% of the world population When you also analyze the fact that you can conclude that, the easier the medium, the more access to targeted user base communities. For VR and the Metaverse, we literally want all gamers (casual, pro, inclined) and even social interactive gamers(like second World) to be involved. Mobile Games is levels higher in revenue they generate over PC and console games combined Social Interactions Yeah, I think this might be the point most folks can predict or visualize the metaverse as.

As a Gamer, I can tell you that this (when implemented to its full capacity) is sick, I mean we cannot go around the fact that it's cool, can we?. super Unlike traditional Games, where we can communicate with other players usually through chatrooms or Multiplayer Chatboxes, for example as we have in Brawl Stars, Fortnight, Among US. Metaverse worlds are taking it miles further, because not only can you communicate using words, you can with body movements, A whole lot more interactions are available to us like Dancing, Waving, Playing Bowling, Racing in Virtual Cars, etc. Social Interactions in a fully developed Metaverse(whatever that looks like, but you get my point) would be totally seamless for all kinds of communications (Family, Friends, Business Partners, Conferences, Classes, Remote Schooling, Work-from-Home Companies, etc), Can you imagine if all these industries and groups of people create dedicated hubs or services inside a Metaverse like Somnium Space? That's just WOW!, The concept of Metaverse has shown us that it promises not just Games but a Decentralized world of E-business. Brief Conclusion After experiencing lots of Play2Earn Blockchain games popping up with great hype and then catching up with its real lackluster community/project, I've tried to map out exactly where I stand and what my morals should be (it's crazy but you need a guide map) and my decision has been; , thankfully a mass load of news in the Blockchain Gamefi world gets filtered out with this new model; Just keep it simple and do your thing To keep it focused on what I like and what gets me excited Concerning the Metaverse?... I wanna give it time to grow, nurture, and mature, so as much I am enthusiastic about it right now, I'm not hoping for a masterpiece anytime soon, but there could be surprises for all of us, especially now that Facebook joined the game Ugh. A Glimpse Into the Past The concept of smart contracts predates the inception of blockchains, having been delineated by Nick Szabo in 1994. The first practical application emerged years later in 2015 with the Ethereum platform. Fundamentally, smart contracts automate contractual obligations and eliminate intermediaries. Smart contracts have found extensive applications in finance, overshadowing their potential to automate processes across various domains. Decentralized Applications (DApps) extend beyond financial tools; they merely scratch the surface. While the DeFi market has soared in complexity and success, other sectors lag behind significantly. Challenges Facing DApps in Non-Financial Sectors: Development complexity and cost Blockchain’s slow performance Lack of robust integration tools (wallets, infrastructure, etc.) Attempts at broader application have made little headway. The State of Gaming in Decentralization CryptoKitties marked the first step towards decentralized gaming, though it was largely controlled by its developers. Axie Infinity, despite its success, faced significant challenges, including a $615 million hack, due to its proprietary blockchain. Moreover, its gameplay mechanics are private, challenging its decentralized nature. Other projects like Gods Unchained and Heroes of Mavia also fall short of full decentralization. The current trend involves separating gameplay from asset ownership (NFTs for characters and items), with gameplay largely centralized. However such projects omit that mere ownership of NFTs does not provide “full control over assets.” Assets only have value thanks to gameplay mechanics, which are 100% under the control of developers. A popular term describing current projects is . GameFi Low decentralization and emphasis on play to earn. Examples: Axie Infinity Illuvium Splinterlands Pixels League of Kingdoms Gods Unchained Heroes of Mavia Seraph Decentralized Games Truly decentralized games are currently few and far between. Existing games can be divided into the following groups: Focus on the Blockchain Component The gameplay consists of a basic set of actions or resembles very basic game mechanics. The characteristic of such projects is that tokenomics are central, with gameplay tacked on top. It’s hard to call these fully-fledged games. Examples include CryptoKitties, DefiKingdoms, Crypto Raiders, and Neon District. Community-Developed Ecosystems The main project develops only basic assets while the community ecosystem develops games for these assets. This sounds cool and could achieve full decentralization. The problem is that games tend to be boring and often have centralized gameplay. This approach could lead to some good games, but any successful project within such an ecosystem is likely to outgrow it and become its own entity (as happened with DOTA evolving from a map for Warcraft 3 into a standalone game). Examples are Aavegotchi and Axie Infinity (planned). SDK for Simplified Game Development This route allows for significantly fewer resources to be spent on blockchain, and in theory, the gameplay should be more refined. This approach is very promising, but there is a risk that all games will look alike and be quite formulaic. Nonetheless, studios that invest efforts in developing an SDK based on their contracts have every chance to make a good game as a “showcase” for their engine (similar to Unreal Tournament from the web2 era). Examples include MUD SDK and Paima Studios SDK. Effort to Combine Forces Creating quality gameplay and laying the foundation for full decentralization. This approach requires prioritizing the creation of a gameplay process where blockchain serves as an advantage rather than a checkbox feature. This direction is the most promising but also the most challenging. Examples are Primodium and Sacra: Falling of Myrd. Why Do We Need Decentralization for Games? To break the current trend, it’s necessary to focus on the question, and convey this to the users. “Why does a game need to be decentralized at all?” The simple answer to this question is the same as “Why is Bitcoin needed?” Real Ownership of Assets True ownership of an asset means control over its value. Only by providing decentralized gameplay can you guarantee real ownership of the asset. Security Open source is not just a whim of crypto maximalists. Only open source allows for a real security audit and identification of vulnerabilities. Moreover, immutable (or DAO-controlled mutable) code guarantees the preservation of assets and the gameplay mechanics that give value to the game’s main assets. Economy Building a complex economy capable of handling significant assets requires unprecedented quality and security of code in the gaming industry. Fortunately, years of DeFi existence have accumulated best practices in this area. For a game built on smart contracts, it’s easy to imagine an economy operating billions. Excluding the influence of third parties, whether intentional or unintentional, ensures confidence in the stability of the in-game economic model. Resistance to Censorship I think almost every gamer has faced being banned for unclear reasons or even denied access to a game altogether. A decentralized game is protected from this as much as the blockchain it runs on is protected. Even in the presence of a centralized company that supports the game’s UI, the original client code will always be available, allowing the game to be launched locally. Community and Governance The openness of the product attracts a genuinely interested community around the project. The ability to contribute and manage key issues through voting creates incredible long-term support. Integration of Real Assets into the Game Economy A game can be seen as a small state. Like any other state, to ensure a stable economy, it can own assets of other states. This is fully relevant for decentralized games. It’s easy to imagine assets locked in a game generating passive income and creating additional value for the project. All of this can be summarized in one word: DeGame. Technical Implementation Currently, various blockchains have their smart contracts, but EVM and Solidity are the de facto industrial standards. It’s not just that 90% of all developments are written in Solidity, but also the infrastructure built around EVM networks. RPC providers, The Graph protocol for the backend part, Dune analytics dashboards, and other tools solve many problems that are difficult to compensate for with other tech stacks. But is it really possible to “squeeze” game logic into Solidity given that the size of contracts is limited to 24KB and the block time in most blockchains does not exceed 2 seconds? Yes, it’s more than feasible. There are many design patterns for writing complex logic, such as The Diamond Standard (EIP-2335) and the use of libraries along with the ERC-7201 standard. These approaches allow us to almost completely bypass the limitation on the size of the smart contract code. The gas limit per transaction imposes serious restrictions on the number of actions a player can take in one go. However, the use of packed data and standard gas optimization methods allow for even complex logic such as pathfinding on terrain and determining lines of sight within a single transaction. Blockchain enables unique gameplay mechanics for multiplayer. In a standard MMO game, solving the problem of lag with 1000+ players online is practically impossible, but here, the mechanism of competition for gas comes into play. Moreover, gas payments can be tied to in-game currency through ERC-4337. This means you can control the online servers with in-game mechanics (pay more in-game currency to participate in a castle siege with other players, for example). At this stage, it’s too early to talk about a fully decentralized game with real-time action gameplay. However, game genres with turn-based gameplay fit perfectly with the concept of block finalization. Essentially, technical limitations encourage the creation of new genre combinations, such as turn-based MMO RPGs. Over time, a specific blockchain will be created to process on-chain actions of players sufficient even for real-time shooters. L2/L3 blockchains, which can now be deployed in minutes through a UI, have proven themselves well in this regard. It’s more than realistic to imagine a situation where a blockchain game can create its own temporary L3 for a specific game session. The Future of DeGame As always, games present a real challenge to the entire IT industry, pushing it towards more efficient solutions. Not only is there a need to develop complex logic on smart contracts, but the blockchain must also be capable of processing a huge number of transactions. Fortunately, there are now many blockchains capable of achieving the necessary throughput. A sufficiently large project could even develop its own blockchain to handle transactions specific to the game. A decentralized server part for the game with its validators and consensus. However, in the early stages, a standard universal blockchain is more than enough for games without real-time action. And as experience shows, it’s better to focus on one thing, whether it’s the game itself or the infrastructure in the form of a fast blockchain. In the future, we will see many projects that implement gameplay on smart contracts and open a new era in the gaming industry. This revolution goes hand in hand with the evolution of all crypto projects, and it’s only a matter of time before the old game development is displaced by new approaches.

The general consensus from the headlines was simple—NFTs are here to stay. That soon changed. An NFT market that was bursting with energy earlier in the year began to see its value plummet. A general crash in the crypto market affected NFT sales. The market value of crypto art fell, and many speculators concluded that this was the end of the road for the nascent market. Big Buys, No Gain Many investors and Wall Street argued that the NFT bubble burst is just a sign of temporary distress in the market. Several signs point to the fact that this assertion may be untrue. Even the most promising niches that had performed exceptionally in 2021 were nowhere to be seen this year. As of December 2022, the total value locked (TVL) across DeFi protocols stands at $38 billion, down from $166 billion at the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) trading volume tanked by over 90%, leaving most NFT holders stranded in an illiquid market. DeFi TVL in 2022: DeFiLlama Contagion: The Word of the Year The crypto market's intertwined nature was undoubtedly exposed last year; many big firms were affected by the collapse of Terra and FTX, including industry heavyweights that had billions worth of U.S. dollars in assets under management (AUM). Some of the big players that went bankrupt due to substantial exposure in either Terra or FTX include Three Arrows Capital (3AC), Celsius, Voyager Digital, and more recently BlockFi, which was one of the largest digital asset lending firms. Simply put, the chickens came home to roost in 2022, and to make it worse, we are not sure we're fully out of the woods yet with several implications following the FTX implosion still to settle. Terra’s Collapse First launched in 2018, Terra’s ecosystem was on a roll until May this year when the UST algorithmic stablecoin lost its peg against the U.S. dollar. It all started when over $2 billion was withdrawn from Terra’s lending and borrowing protocol Anchor on May 7, triggering hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars liquidations. Ultimately, the UST stablecoin was affected by the massive capital outflow and lost its peg to trade at 35 cents by May 9. While Terra’s founder Do Kwon tried to restore back the peg by ‘Deploying more capital - steady lads’, the statement only amounted to becoming a meme within the crypto community. However, it was the aftermath that shocked most crypto stakeholders, a cumulative $60 billion worth of investors' money was lost in this unfortunate event. What followed was a streak of bankruptcy filings by several crypto firms that had invested in Terra’s ecosystem, either directly or indirectly. 3AC, Voyager Digital, and Celsius File for Bankruptcy The collapse of Terra’s UST stablecoin caused a serious ripple effect in the industry, with Three Arrows Capital (3AC), Voyager Digital, and Celsius being among the most affected. Just three weeks after UST depegged, 3AC filed for a chapter 15 bankruptcy and defaulted on a $650 million loan owed to Voyager Digital. This forced the investment firm to also halt withdrawals and eventually file for bankruptcy in the Southern District of New York. The script was similar for Celsius, although it took a bit longer before the crypto-lending company declared bankruptcy. At first, Celsius halted BTC withdrawals on June 12 citing  ‘extreme market conditions’, but with its native token $CEL plummeting by over 70%, the firm was ultimately forced to file for bankruptcy on July 13, 2022.
