Decimated Game Overview Decimated is a role-playing game set in the hostile environment of a grim cyberpunk world. Players are tasked with ensuring the survival of their character, with the title offering them the option to play as either a human or a cyborg. In order to survive, they must acquire resources and technology. With these, they can then repair vehicles, build bases, fortify their shelters, hunt, raid, loot, and trade. The 256 km² online world, which can be explored by land, sea, and air, offers players a wealth of possibilities. In the beginning, they will have to explore them mainly on foot. But there is also the option of so-called fast travel, which is offered by NPCs for a fee. In the wilderness, there is then the possibility of finding vehicle pieces, spare parts, and building materials. All the necessary items can be found on the map or purchased on the marketplace. To survive, players must also search for food, water, and in some cases, oxygen. If a player is injured, they must treat the injury, otherwise, they risk bleeding to death. During last week’s DevDay, , under the direction of CEO Sam Altman, unveiled a series of updates. The company introduced ‘GPT-4 Turbo’, enhancing affordability for external developers. This upgraded version expands ChatGPT’s knowledge base to include information up to April 2023, surpassing its previous limit of September 2021. Meanwhile, in an odd strategic move, the company is offering to cover its clients’ legal costs for copyright infringement suits (challenge accepted). OpenAI The biggest announcement, however, was the coming availability of what Altman called ‘GPTs’ (aka Generative Pre-trained Transformers; he’s not great at branding). In essence, GPTs are custom chatbots that can be built using custom (private) data on top of their existing “knowledge” and that can be tweaked to have specific goals or personalities. One of the use cases already available to test in the ChatGPT app is “Game Time: I can quickly explain board games or card games to players of any age. Let the games begin!” Another is: “The Negotiator: I’ll help you advocate for yourself and get better outcomes. Become a great negotiator”. And, of course, my favorite: “Genz 4 meme: I help u understand the lingo & the latest memes.” The AI “Agents” (as they should be called) can be created/configured without any coding knowledge, using only natural language. You can simply give it a name and a description, then define what it should do, how it should behave, and what it should avoid doing. You can then upload files to increase its proficiency in the specific task given. In a demo, Altman made a “startup mentor” that gives advice to founders based on talks he’d given in the past. We are essentially witnessing wave 2 of the . Wave 1 productized and democratized large language models; we are now personalizing them to the individual. The same thing happened to the internet and social media (from 2007’s open Facebook to 2023’s personalized TikTok)… but it took 15 years, not one! AI wars Four things stand out as we move to a personalized AI assistant world. GPTs will displace millions of jobs. Private AI assistants are something many companies have been clamoring for since ChatGPT came out a year ago. They have data like employee handbooks, benefits info, and customer service manuals… and they want to make that searchable and accessible through a chatbot without needing to code or make the data accessible to the public. This is now possible. Let’s not kid ourselves. This will displace millions of jobs, as what is done by five people can now be done by two. Customer services is about to be decimated. Then will come HR. Accounting, too. Across organizations and the world over, “support” functions will be halved, if not more. Companies were already working on it before last week’s announcement. That work has now been accelerated ten-fold. Managing these changes should be the government’s first priority. A new economy will emerge. One of Altman’s less-spoken-about announcements is the idea that GPTs can be shared and would be commercialisable/monetizable in the near future. This would create, in essence, a new App Store, one of the 21st century’s greatest inventions. It will be fascinating to see where customers place value since ChatGPT is open by design. Will it be in the custom data? In the personality given? Should it be the former, the companies with the most content will have the most power. Not much would change then, and anti-trust regulators should take a much closer look at these tools (as we are recreating the platforms of the last era of computing). There is a potential for net positives, too. This is a huge opportunity for healthcare, for example. If an NGO trains algorithms based on the trove of medical data available online, on the millions of diagnostics and images available… we could make healthcare accessible to all for a tiny fraction of the prices we see today. Hell, it could even be free for some people who need it most. I already wrote about the democratizing power of AI; we are getting closer to that reality. We just have to be willing to make it happen. Human interactions will change. One of the first use cases I thought about when I started playing with the new GPT interface is feeding the I’ve ever had with my wife to see if some simple daily conversations can be automated. AI all the conversations I won’t be the only one with similar thoughts. How can we know if any interaction online is real once these tools spread? And how long before we feed an AI the data (texts, emails, voice recordings…, etc.) of someone who’s passed away to turn it into a simile of the real thing? Someone we can talk to to cope? No long. In fact, it already exists… and just got easier to do. Altman literally said in his keynote last week: “We will all have superpowers on demand.” While we are recreating a deity capable of making us live forever, we should make sure we don’t lose a little humanity in the process. Dangerous AI use cases may emerge. We are rapidly moving to a reality where AI Agents can not only talk about things but also act based on specific instructions and their given “persona.” As we personalize our AI agents/assistants, we will no doubt want them to take action on our behalf (something I predicted back in April). If the path to completing the action is not defined, the AI agent will make its own path. This can lead to unwanted externalities if we’re not careful. Let’s say you want to reserve a table at a fancy restaurant. You explain to your that it’s very important to you. The AI then calls the staff and threatens them. Or it hires someone to do it. Or it emotionally manipulates the staff, whose info it found online. These tools are very much “black “boxes, and it’s important to put the right guardrails in place to ensure this doesn’t happen. AI Assistant It’s important not to overstress the importance of the changes made available this week. GPTs are still made mostly of the “usual” chatGPT, with a sprinkling of personalization. You could do most of the things highlighted above… but you would have had to input multiple prompts. All in all, this is just a shortcut. Not a leap forward. For now. We are witnessing the formation of a generationally important company. Today, OpenAI is being careful and slow about the roll-out. A whole army of Polygons, who turned out to fight as private soldiers, was utterly annihilated by a superior force of Isosceles Triangles—the Squares and Pentagons meanwhile remaining neutral. Worse than all, some of the ablest Circles fell a prey to conjugal fury. Infuriated by political animosity, the wives in many a noble household wearied their lords with prayers to give up their opposition to the Colour Bill; and some, finding their entreaties fruitless, fell on and slaughtered their innocent children and husband, perishing themselves in the act of carnage. It is recorded that during that triennial agitation no less than twenty-three Circles perished in domestic discord. Great indeed was the peril. It seemed as though the Priests had no choice between submission and extermination; when suddenly the course of events was completely changed by one of those picturesque incidents which Statesmen ought never to neglect, often to anticipate, and sometimes perhaps to originate, because of the absurdly disproportionate power with which they appeal to the sympathies of the populace. It happened that an Isosceles of a low type, with a brain little if at all above four degrees—accidentally dabbling in the colours of some Tradesman whose shop he had plundered—painted himself, or caused himself to be painted (for the story varies) with the twelve colours of a Dodecagon. Going into the Market Place he accosted in a feigned voice a maiden, the orphan daughter of a noble Polygon, whose affection in former days he had sought in vain; and by a series of deceptions—aided, on the one side, by a string of lucky accidents too long to relate, and on the other, by an almost inconceivable fatuity and neglect of ordinary precautions on the part of the relations of the bride—he succeeded in consummating the marriage. The unhappy girl committed suicide on discovering the fraud to which she had been subjected. When the news of this catastrophe spread from State to State the minds of the Women were violently agitated. Sympathy with the miserable victim and anticipations of similar deceptions for themselves, their sisters, and their daughters, made them now regard the Colour Bill in an entirely new aspect. Not a few openly avowed themselves converted to antagonism; the rest needed only a slight stimulus to make a similar avowal. Seizing this favourable opportunity, the Circles hastily convened an extraordinary Assembly of the States; and besides the usual guard of Convicts, they secured the attendance of a large number of reactionary Women. Amidst an unprecedented concourse, the Chief Circle of those days—by name Pantocyclus—arose to find himself hissed and hooted by a hundred and twenty thousand Isosceles. But he secured silence by declaring that henceforth the Circles would enter on a policy of Concession; yielding to the wishes of the majority, they would accept the Colour Bill. The uproar being at once converted to applause, he invited Chromatistes, the leader of the Sedition, into the centre of the hall, to receive in the name of his followers the submission of the Hierarchy. Then followed a speech, a masterpiece of rhetoric, which occupied nearly a day in the delivery, and to which no summary can do justice. With a grave appearance of impartiality he declared that as they were now finally committing themselves to Reform or Innovation, it was desirable that they should take one last view of the perimeter of the whole subject, its defects as well as its advantages. Gradually introducing the mention of the dangers to the Tradesmen, the Professional Classes and the Gentlemen, he silenced the rising murmurs of the Isosceles by reminding them that, in spite of all these defects, he was willing to accept the Bill if it was approved by the majority. But it was manifest that all, except the Isosceles, were moved by his words and were either neutral or averse to the Bill. Turning now to the Workmen he asserted that their interests must not be neglected, and that, if they intended to accept the Colour Bill, they ought at least to do so with full view of the consequences. Many of them, he said, were on the point of being admitted to the class of the Regular Triangles; others anticipated for their children a distinction they could not hope for themselves. That honourable ambition would now have to be sacrificed. With the universal adoption of Colour, all distinctions would cease; Regularity would be confused with Irregularity; development would give place to retrogression; the Workman would in a few generations be degraded to the level of the Military, or even the Convict Class; political power would be in the hands of the greatest number, that is to say the Criminal Classes, who were already more numerous than the Workmen, and would soon out-number all the other Classes put together when the usual Compensative Laws of Nature were violated. A subdued murmur of assent ran through the ranks of the Artisans, and Chromatistes, in alarm, attempted to step forward and address them. But he found himself encompassed with guards and forced to remain silent while the Chief Circle in a few impassioned words made a final appeal to the Women, exclaiming that, if the Colour Bill passed, no marriage would henceforth be safe, no woman's honour secure; fraud, deception, hypocrisy would pervade every household; domestic bliss would share the fate of the Constitution and pass to speedy perdition. "Sooner than this," he cried, "Come death." At these words, which were the preconcerted signal for action, the Isosceles Convicts fell on and transfixed the wretched Chromatistes; the Regular Classes, opening their ranks, made way for a band of Women who, under direction of the Circles, moved, back foremost, invisibly and unerringly upon the unconscious soldiers; the Artisans, imitating the example of their betters, also opened their ranks. Meantime bands of Convicts occupied every entrance with an impenetrable phalanx. The battle, or rather carnage, was of short duration. Under the skillful generalship of the Circles almost every Woman's charge was fatal and very many extracted their sting uninjured, ready for a second slaughter. But no second blow was needed; the rabble of the Isosceles did the rest of the business for themselves. Surprised, leader-less, attacked in front by invisible foes, and finding egress cut off by the Convicts behind them, they at once—after their manner—lost all presence of mind, and raised the cry of "treachery". This sealed their fate. Every Isosceles now saw and felt a foe in every other. In half an hour not one of that vast multitude was living; and the fragments of seven score thousand of the Criminal Class slain by one another's angles attested the triumph of Order. The Circles delayed not to push their victory to the uttermost. The Working Men they spared but decimated. The Militia of the Equilaterals was at once called out; and every Triangle suspected of Irregularity on reasonable grounds, was destroyed by Court Martial, without the formality of exact measurement by the Social Board. The homes of the Military and Artisan classes were inspected in a course of visitations extending through upwards of a year; and during that period every town, village, and hamlet was systematically purged of that excess of the lower orders which had been brought about by the neglect to pay the tribute of Criminals to the Schools and University, and by the violation of the other natural Laws of the Constitution of Flatland. Thus the balance of classes was again restored. Needless to say that henceforth the use of Colour was abolished, and its possession prohibited. Even the utterance of any word denoting Colour, except by the Circles or by qualified scientific teachers, was punished by a severe penalty. Only at our University in some of the very highest and most esoteric classes—which I myself have never been privileged to attend—it is understood that the sparing use of Colour is still sanctioned for the purpose of illustrating some of the deeper problems of mathematics. But of this I can only speak from hearsay. Elsewhere in Flatland, Colour is now non-existent. The art of making it is known to only one living person, the Chief Circle for the time being; and by him it is handed down on his death-bed to none but his Successor. One manufactory alone produces it; and, lest the secret should be betrayed, the Workmen are annually consumed, and fresh ones introduced. So great is the terror with which even now our Aristocracy looks back to the far-distant days of the agitation for the Universal Colour Bill. Could a “ChatCEO” reduce costs and improve business? Jeff Bezos famously said, “Your margin is my opportunity,” and for nearly 30 years Amazon has destroyed brick-and-mortar margins to dominate retail sales and distribution. With the advent of social media 20 years ago and its explosive growth in the last decade, the new “margin” became our own attention. Big Tech has profited mightly by extracting our attention away from the time we once spent with family, friends, and neighbors. In force-feeding us the Internet’s most incendiary garbage, we are angrier, lonelier, and more depressed than ever–by design. Steve Wozniak, Yuval Noah Harari, Andrew Yang, and Elon Musk are among the most prominent of the more than thirty-three thousand people, predominantly men, who have earlier this year. While the letter raises some valid concerns, the existential-risk-to-humanity cries about the “dangers” of artificial intelligence have been rather vague and feel more like fear-mongering than actual concerns. The clearest example of harm is already widely available:  generative AI is easily used by human or nation-state actors to manipulate populations–a continuation of social media’s scorched social fabric march toward profits. signed the open letter to pause AI experiments With so many names of AI technology gatekeepers on the call for pause, author that the strategy feels similar to a "would-be street fighter depending on his friends to ‘restrain’ him lest he take the other guy apart, it’s just a form of bluffing.” These tools still require a great deal of human creativity (and malevolence) to cause trouble, and no development pause will curb our current profit and power-driven paradigm in which executives view human attention as something to harvest at the brain stem. We are closer to a Matrix-type dystopia than I’ve ever cared to admit. Not driven by self-aware machines but instead driven by short-term profits and an ignorant elite, who are now succumbing to their own algorithms, while attempting to shove us into a Ready Player One-style metaverse. It’s not the rise of artificial intelligence, but . As the algorithmic attention extraction system continues to expand, it has now come for the elite themselves. Mark Zuckerberg and Musk threaten to livestream a brain stem-driven cage fight and Bezos is focused on Instagramable yachts and rockets, while the hubris of the Titanic has claimed five more lives after 111 years on the sea floor. Operating exactly as designed, the system they created and funded has thoroughly set its sights on the wealthy. the fall of emotional intelligence (EQ) that remains humanity’s biggest threat Today there is a new emerging bloated margin to be exploited: the vast expanse between business leaders with and without a value for and possession of emotional intelligence. Musk and Peter Thiel seem to celebrate their lack of EQ and Zuckerberg is as out of touch with the ground as an avatar with no legs. Being out of touch with the 99% may be a fatal flaw, and AI could be well-positioned to capitalize on this disconnect. Any large language model like ChatGPT could easily mimic the shortsighted “rank and yank” logic used by “Neutron Jack” Welch minions over the past fifty years in the pursuit of efficiency over value–a logic that has decimated the middle class. Despite the, now quaint, humanity-lifting aspirations of founders’ annual shareholder letters, most have been crippled by embedded growth obligations that founders have been incapable of escaping. However, as the signers of the open letter feel the pull of the algorithms on their own attention, we may be at the dawn of a new age in business. Now that ChatGPT can pass a bar exam, earn an MBA, and create all manner of business, legal, and strategy documents, artificial intelligence could also eventually replace the executive and investor classes. Given the opportunity, AI will easily master the administration of business. Perhaps AI could even run a business well enough to achieve B Corp Certification. And perhaps that is what the gatekeepers are afraid of. When machine intelligence deploys financial capital better than either an Ivy League graduate or a well-timed dropout founder, their game will be over. The merger of machine learning and stakeholder capitalism could chart a new course, offering humanity our attention back by simply eliminating a layer of financial overhead. Corporations could start cutting those margins by replacing expensive, myopic CEOs with a “ChatCEO” that understands three simple commands–respect human dignity, minimize environmental harm, and maintain long-term profitability.
